Like any tool, a calculator can only do what you make it do. Just as using a hammer doesn’t reflect on a carpenter’s skill, using a calculator doesn’t mean a math student is lacking in their application. Current technology allows students to handle problems of far greater complexity and depth than ever before, problems that most students wouldn’t be able to solve previously. With the absence of calculators in our classroom, the students have a slow progress as they still use the conventional way of solving problems in my physical science class. I have noticed that my students will perform efficiently and quickly in solving problems involved in my Physical Science Class if they could use the calculator. They have great analytical skills and with the aid of those calculators, my class can go on solving more word problems which would involve higher-order thinking skills.
