I bet you are a reliable spouse, parent, friend and citizen too. \r\n\r\nThis library-like assortment of books has given us the ability to pivot between themes like justice and self-agency and between different voices and vocabulaires that illuminate the learning experience. We've implemented \"drop everything and read\" (or DEAR) class exercises twice a week and the students are all hip-deep in the stories! Thank you for making that happen with your generosity. The Science Kits served as centers to reinforce instructional objectives. Those students who struggle with comprehension of text, even when it is leveled according to academic functioning levels, were able to grasp learning objectives using visual instructions provided in the kits. Since most are on the Autism Spectrum, having explicit visuals was a plus. My students were able to gain a better understanding of motion, magnetism, and sound. One student who normally has difficulty expressing himself was able to verbalize why different items sink or float.\r\n\r\nAnother student was able to use the Butterfly Project as a platform for her writing project. She does not like to write. This hands-on project allowed her to touch and see characteristics of butterflies. Using tactile learning and visual learning techniques she was able to verbalize her writing project and expound on the basic concepts presented. She was able to share comparisons and contrasts between moths and butterflies.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your generosity in giving!!","fullyFundedDate":1755727648587,"projectUrl":"project/stem-learning-inquiry-and-application/9595594/","projectTitle":"STEM Learning: Inquiry and Application","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Williams","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5169523_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1519677631721","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5169523"},{"teacherId":5169523,"projectId":9099478,"letterContent":"The impact this project has had on my students has been one of great success. Having a supply of graphic novels on my shelves for my kids allows them to pick up books they feel less afraid of and encourages them to try to read through the content. The pictures really help them make sense of the story, and help them see and learn what new words mean. It is said a picture is worth a thousand words, and I have found that to be true in my classroom. The kids today are extremely reliant on visuals, given that they have been raised using a gamut of technology, and graphic novels satisfies that need while they read. As such, my focus has often been to build my supply of books for teenage boys. While I was looking over my collection last year, I realized just how lacking my supply of books geared towards girls was, and I decided to start remedying that. Thanks to your generous gifts, I have been able to add these graphic novels with feminine content to my shelves, and my teenage girls have thoroughly enjoyed reading through them. Not only are these books geared towards girls, they are graphic novels full of colorful pictures to look at. This appeases their common desire for visual content to look at while reading, which stems from them being so immersed in technology for the better part of their lives. Being a young lady is difficult to say the least, but being a young lady in a school with mostly boys can be even more daunting. These books have provided a safe haven for the girls to crawl into and forget about where they are for a while. I strongly feel that your precious gift will encourage them to continue reading in the future, and to reach for new books to befriend in the future.","fullyFundedDate":1742926089205,"projectUrl":"project/graphic-novels-for-girl-power/9121450/","projectTitle":"Graphic Novels For Girl Power","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hand","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5350402_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1524687959187","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5350402"},{"teacherId":5350402,"projectId":9121372,"letterContent":"Many of my students are years behind where they should be in their reading. The majority of my kids are people of color, and I would be remiss to not represent that diversity on my bookshelves. Thanks to your magnanimous generosity, I have been able to give my kids books with characters who look, talk, and think the way my kids look, talk, and think. Seeing yourself in a story you are reading is invaluable when you are absorbing the lessons from said story. The world unfortunately tends to view people of color with racism and negative bias, and reading a book, especially a \"based on a true story\" book, with characters that are similar to the reader, it allows the reader to really get into the plot and stand up and cheer that character on. When the character achieves overcoming hurdles and pitfalls, the kids believe THEY can overcome hurdles and pitfalls they face in their own lives. So thank you generous gift-givers for your generosity and your compassionate hearts.","fullyFundedDate":1739569626625,"projectUrl":"project/representing-underrepresented-authors/9105734/","projectTitle":"Representing Underrepresented Authors","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hand","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5350402_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1524687959187","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5350402"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_18762","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":250,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":43,"percentWhite":31,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":12,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":59.2,"schoolId":18762,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Whitlock Flexible Learning Center on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Whitlock Flexible Learning Center","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/south-carolina/spartanburg-school-district-7/spartanberg-co-alternative-school/18762"}
