Reynolds is a popular author amongst the students in my school, so having this resource truly engaged them in class. We used the book as part of our poetry unit, as it is written entirely in verse. My students were able to relate to a lot of the themes in the book and could empathize with the main character who is about their age. \r\n\r\nI have many reluctant readers in this class so high-interest texts are a must-have for them. They enjoyed making predictions and were genuinely disappointed when the story came to an end. After reading the novel, my students wrote an essay that tied the novel's themes to real-life gang violence in America.
