Many of my students struggle with different forms of literature. Often I hear “Ms. D this is boring!” or “I don’t feel like reading this.” This book will change that mindset. Jason Reynolds is an amazing writer that I believe many of my students will relate to. I teach primarily Black students that need to be exposed to more Black writers. This novel uses a mix of poetry and literature to tell a relatable story about one young Black man’s experience. I believe this story will not only interest my students in literature and poetry, but it will make my students feel represented. Representation is important in the classroom. When students see that many Black prolific writers exist, they become inspired to write themselves. I want to use Jason Reynolds‘ work to inspire my students to become writers themselves.
