My students and I are enjoying having the resources to dive into chemistry hands-on to figure out how chemistry is part of our everyday lives. They were able to use modeling clay to show how a volcano can spew out blue flames as well as create their own Egyptian paste. We used accurate measuring skills and direction following as a basis to determine success. We explored how making a mixture of different chemicals is a physical change and then followed that up with a chemical change when the pieces were fired in the kiln. We were able to look at how the mixtures could be homogeneous or heterogeneous depending on how well they mixed their ingredients.\r\n \r\n This is my 24th year working with students in an underserved school, and it makes me feel successful when students come in at random times throughout the day to check on their projects.
