The students earn the opportunity to sit on the beanbags for the day. Many of our students prefer to sit on the floor and the pillows offer comfortable seating. We do some of our best work on the floor. \r\n\r\nThe storage carts keep our classroom organized. We use tables for our classroom and we need space for our supplies and the carts really help keep everything in one place. Students have developed part of their routine to have a space to charge their devices every morning as they arrive to school. Sometimes we have to do a countdown because it is so hard for them to choose because of all of the great selections possible. \r\n\r\nWe select a variety a choices to combat their hunger and reward their hard work, but by far their favorites are the Takis and Slim Jims. What I especially love about the materials is the booklets and handouts that we use over and over that talks about strategies they can use to help them to recall information for stories/longer information. \r\n\r\nI am seeing students start to make \"pictures/movies in their mind\" to help them to recall and answer questions. This is a skill that really needs to be developed and I notice is absent in these students that are struggling. We think aloud together as we \"draw\" in our mind as each part of the story comes up. The students regularly use the sequencing cards to build narratives to work on using more robust and specific language along with monitoring grammar. Sequencing cards are such a great addition to our arsenal to practice language and articulation to become stronger communicators. They really enjoy the opportunity to develop and create stories and become more proficient at telling a story. \r\n\r\nWe use the verb cards and sentence building cards to build vocabulary and become more aware of what makes a sentence. We have students that have more limited vocabulary and need repeated practice on learning new vocabulary to be able to use to create sentences. The sentence building is incorporated in the activities once they are gaining language and it also helps students that are having comprehension difficulties due to poor understanding of sentence structure.
