For many of our high schoolers, the barrier to focusing in class isn't a lack of interest—it's the stress of not having access to basic necessities. My students are using these resources with a level of maturity and gratitude that is truly moving. We've integrated the corner into our daily routine; it's a \"no-questions-asked\" zone where students can discreetly grab items like deodorant, feminine products, or dental kits. One specific moment that stood out was during a high-stakes presentation week; I watched a student, who usually hides in the back, use the new supplies to freshen up before his turn. He walked to the front of the room with his head held high, looking—and more importantly, feeling—ready to succeed.\r\n\r\nThe reaction when the boxes first arrived was one of pure disbelief followed by genuine excitement. Teenagers can sometimes be hard to read, but the \"wow\" factor was unmistakable. There was a palpable buzz in the room as they helped me unbox the supplies, and one student even remarked, \"It's like someone actually thought about what we need every day.\" It has sparked a newfound sense of community in our room; the students have taken it upon themselves to keep the area organized and tidy, showing a level of ownership and pride that has transformed our classroom culture from just a place of study into a safe, supportive sanctuary.\r\n\r\nNow that our basic needs are being met, our next steps involve a deep dive into our Wellness and Self-Advocacy unit. Having these materials on hand allows us to transition from simply discussing health to practicing it in real-time. Students are currently working on personal care plans to build sustainable routines, and inspired by your kindness, the class is even brainstorming ways to organize a small-scale \"pay-it-forward\" pantry for the rest of the school. We keep the box on our collective table and start class off with a snack before diving into the complicated material of the course. \r\n\r\n The tissues and cleaners have been bountiful throughout the winter season. I have a box in every corner of the classroom and kids are getting up more often than usual to politely blow their nose instead of suffering in a silent, miserable drip when no tissues are available. Instead of worrying about mistakes or background noise, they can record themselves, listen back, and try again. This has made speaking feel less intimidating and more empowering.\r\n\r\nSome of my quieter students have benefited the most. Because of you, my students received 33 copies of Brandon Brown quiere un perro, and these books have quickly become a favorite in our classroom.\r\n\r\nTeaching students to read in another language can be challenging, but these books make it feel exciting and achievable. Through this story, students are learning how to understand meaning from context, recognize common vocabulary, follow dialogue, and stay engaged with a full story in Spanish—not just isolated words or grammar drills.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is active and joyful. Students read on their own, with partners, and sometimes aloud as a group. They stop to laugh, make predictions, and talk about Brandon's problem and how he tries to solve it. Because the book is written at their level, students feel successful, which motivates them to keep reading instead of giving up.\r\n\r\nSome of the students who have benefited the most are those who were once hesitant or unsure of their Spanish abilities. I've seen students proudly volunteer to read aloud, help their classmates, and talk confidently about the story. For my heritage speakers, this book feels familiar and validating, while for my language learners, it shows that reading in Spanish is truly possible.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these books have helped my students see reading in Spanish as something enjoyable and meaningful. One of the most exciting aspects of IB Literature is the chance to explore literature from around the world. With so many great texts to choose from, we have to be very selective about the texts we choose for the course. It is especially frustrating when our choices are limited by what we have in the book closet.\r\nLast year we decided to try working with Haruki Murakami's short stories as a way to allow our students to explore a new and unique writing style by a contemporary author. The students were immediately confused and somewhat frustrated, often exclaiming, \"But what does this mean?!\" Very quickly, however, their confusion actually became an avenue of engagement. They realized that they needed to read and reread, set aside some of their assumptions and expectations, and make sense of the story with some understanding of Japanese culture and Murakami's specific version of magical realism. Their frustration shifted - now they weren't afraid or intimidated to engage with Murakami's work, but they felt severely limited by having to work with the cobbled together pdfs of his stories that we could find online. \r\n\tBuilding a unit around Murakami's short story collection The Elephant Vanishes and actually having the full collection available to us in class in hard copy has greatly enriched our study of literature. Students are more engaged with the actual work, have an easier time facilitating in-class discussions, and are better equipped to complete in-class writing. We also felt a certain delight when we handed out the books and Shakhrizoda, a student who is very hard to impress, said, \"Oooh these books are nice though. I would want to buy this!\" \r\n\tThank you for elevating our classroom! Our students are doing meaningful work. They are discussing global issues like the influence of nature on one's understanding of self, the impact of consumerism, alienation vs connection in the face of modernisation, the role of the individual in society, and many more. This system not only ensures greater data accuracy and immediacy, eliminating transcription errors, but also allows students to use the tablet's camera for visual growth tracking with high-resolution, time-stamped photos that can be annotated to mark changes or measure progress. By having students cut, color, and physically build their own molecules, the focus instantly shifted from passively watching to actively doing and discovering. Thanks to plenty of supplies, every student could dive right in.\r\n\r\n\"Aha!\" moments were made easy. Instead of guessing, students could literally manipulate their atoms, flipping and rearranging them until the electron bonds (single, double, or triple) snapped into place as they built molecules. Chemistry became a puzzle they could solve with their hands.\r\n\r\nScience talk exploded. Suddenly, the tough chemistry ideas students normally keep bottled up came rushing out! The problem-solving challenge of making the correct bonds sparked tons of conversation and collaboration, making hard concepts easier to tackle together.\r\n\r\nThe big picture came into focus. Students saw that atoms aren't just stiff, frozen circles on a page. By needing to move and rotate their pieces, they gained a dynamic, real-world understanding of how chemical bonds actually form; a concept often lost in 2D diagrams. This gave students a real-world understanding of how chemical bonds actually form!\r\n\r\nHow did this help with student learning?
