This is largely because of you and your donations of things like the neon lights, setting a calm and almost sedative effect when I turn the big lights partially off. The neon lights have become synonymous with the art room. I love getting to work early and rolling out the yoga mat and breathing, stretching and basking in the quiet (or the music selection of the day) under the glow of the neon lights. \r\nThe Sour Patch, of course, are the consumables that go the fastest in art and I'm always in need of them! The buzz about the upcoming summer and break from school is always something for both teachers and students to look forward to. Having the pens and snacks as rewards to liven up interest when there may be none left is no small thing. \r\nThank you for donating to this project. Both staff and students love being in here. It wouldn't be true or possible without your support. I have baffled teachers ask me, \"How much does this all cost? How do you do this?\" And my reply, every time, with a smile \"I have Donor's Choose angels.\"\r\nThese treats, smelly pens, Croc buttons, rainbow pencils, cool bookmarks, cool stickers that can rival candy. These are things that I most likely could never ask the District to buy. Yet, things like a cozy, clean, nice smelling, soft lit environment and small rewards create a space kids want to simply be in, regardless of their interest in art. This sets the stage for learning, especially for young children, to almost be \"tricked\" into learning. (Not really, they truly love art class here, but you know what I mean. I hope.) \r\nThese treats give me such motivational power, not simply to bribe kids but to honestly reward kids for any random act of bravery or kindness. Thank you. It presses down any coiling papers which happen, despite my begging that the kids do not use too much water with the water color paint or simply when we use tempera paint on non-paint paper. It does the trick so nicely! I use it for my own use, too, in the rare moments where I try to make my own work. \r\nThe fish foam prints are a hit (also included)! With my love of the ocean and it's creatures fostered since childhood, I'm always happy to see images of sea life and tie it into artistic themes like texture and line. The long history of gyotaku printing in Japan is fascinating and I hope my tiny little minds remember bits and pieces of this tradition and how art is made in so many other places in the world. My students couldn't believe real fish were used to make the prints in true gyotaku tradition. \r\n\r\nBoth of these items (print press and fish prints) are durable and non-consumable, so I won't be on here in a few months or a few years asking for replacements! It is a wonderful treat for me for many reasons: 1) I am not really tempted by Sour Patch candies and therefore having bulk bags in my room all year is tolerable 2) They have no gelatin in them which is ideal because I have a large amount of Muslim students who do not eat this ingredient. \r\nThey can get pricy; since I offer stickers or a candy for each class that I see.
