When the materials first arrived, they were so surprised! They had no idea everything was coming at once, and were so excited to start using the white boards in particular. We have many students who love to write out each step of a math problem, and in 6th grade, there are a lot of math problems that have multiple steps!\r\n\r\nWe have also been using the whiteboards for our test review. Students work out the problem and hold up their board to show their answer. The first person to have the correct answer with the correct work wins points! They love competing against each other in a collaborative way!\r\n\r\nSince we are constantly using pencils, having extra erasers on hand is so important! \r\n\r\nThe graph paper is going to come in handy during our final Geometry unit: Area and Volume. Students will be using the paper to construct their very own shoe boxes for their final project of the year. They have to measure the boxes, then find the surface area, and finally decorate to their liking!\r\n\r\nWe at Freire Middle School are just so thrilled to have these supplies on hand, and my two 6th grade classes are able to gain valuable knowledge because they have supplies graciously funded by you. Our classroom has become a colorful reflection of our learning thanks to the funding of this project. \r\n\r\nIn 5th grade we study Esperanza Rising, analyzing key moments that draw connections to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Through this novel study, students learn empathy and understanding for everyone's human rights. One of the posters that gets the most attention in our room is our giant copy of the UDHR. As students read about moments where the UDHR was violated in Esperanza Rising, they illustrate that moment on a sticky note and stick it next to the correlating article number on the poster of the UDHR. This poster is referenced throughout the quarter as students continue to draw connections between the story and the document. This helps them write analytical and comparison paragraphs and essays. \r\n\r\nWhile students love working on that project, they also loved seeing their new supplies roll in! Not only were we able to use these supplies for the giant UDHR poster, but we have since used these supplies for students to do jigsaw group work where they become the expert of a topic, create an informational poster, and then share their knowledge with the class. These supplies have helped fuel teamwork, confidence, engagement, and independent thinking in 5th grade.
