My students were so excited when they first saw the new materials. Many of them immediately wanted to explore the markers, paints, paper, and creative supplies, and it sparked conversations, smiles, and excitement throughout the room. For many of my students, hands-on creativity is one of the best ways for them to communicate ideas, emotions, and imagination.\r\n\r\nWe have already begun using the materials for creative storytelling projects, social-emotional learning activities, and classroom art assignments connected to our theatre and literacy lessons. One special moment was watching students work together to create visual representations of emotions and character ideas during a drama activity. Some students who are usually hesitant to participate became more engaged and confident because they were able to express themselves through art first. The supplies also help support fine motor skills, following directions, collaboration, and independent decision-making, which are all important goals in our Life Skills classroom.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, students will continue using these resources for seasonal projects, theatre-based learning activities, classroom displays, and creative reflections connected to our lessons. We have made so many wonderful meals together, including beans and rice, pasta, mini pizzas, salads, and apple cinnamon muffins. One of the most special moments was during Howard University's Alternative Spring Break, when Howard students came to our classroom and worked with my students to make rasta pasta. It was such a meaningful experience to watch my students cook, learn, and connect with others in such a positive and hands-on way.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new materials, they were excited and ready to get started. Having enough gloves, aprons, chopping boards, kid-safe knives, and cooking supplies helped them feel included, prepared, and proud of what they were doing. Before, cooking activities could be a bit of a struggle because we did not always have enough materials to go around. Students often had to share supplies, and teachers sometimes had to fill in the gaps themselves. Thanks to your support, that has changed.\r\n\r\nThese resources have helped make cooking class smoother, safer, and more meaningful for everyone. My students are not only making food, they are also practicing important life skills like following directions, communicating, taking turns, making choices, and becoming more independent. Your support also helped take some of the financial strain off of us as teachers by allowing us to build a strong set of basic cooking supplies and ingredients for our classroom. We are responsible for buying the ingredients and supplies for our classes, and because of your generosity, we were able to save much more than before.\r\n\r\nWe are so grateful for everything you have made possible. Our next steps are to continue helping students build confidence in the kitchen and grow in the daily living skills they will need for life beyond the classroom. Thanks to your generous contributions, we have done exactly that. For our students, many of whom have intellectual disabilities, receiving these brand-new resources was a transformative moment.\r\n\r\nThe first day we opened the boxes was unforgettable. Our students were absolutely overjoyed to see games that were brand new—not hand-me-downs or worn-out items, but materials that were theirs to explore. In a world where they are often provided with repurposed tools, the presence of crisp, unused games sent a powerful message: You are worth investing in. You have shown them that there is a community of people invested in their education, their joy, and their success.\r\n\r\nThese materials have become essential tools for developing both academic and social skills. Here is how your donations have changed our daily lessons:\r\n\r\nWe have turned this classic into a dedicated financial lab. Students are practicing essential real-world money skills, including counting currency, making wise spending decisions, and navigating the nuances of budgeting. Watching a student calculate their \"rent\" or decide whether they can afford a property is a tangible win for their future independence.\r\n\r\nLiteracy looks different for every student, and for those who respond best to visual aids, Heads Up! is a game-changer. We have integrated our classroom literacy picture cards into the game, allowing students to act out the vocabulary. This has increased participation and engagement, making the connection between the written word and the real world much more accessible.\r\n\r\nWe initially faced a challenge with Jenga—the clatter of falling blocks was too noisy for our sensory-sensitive environment. However, we have successfully pivoted by making it an outdoor activity! It is now a favorite outdoor game that helps students build fine motor skills and patience in an environment where they can safely express their excitement without interrupting the focus of the classroom.\r\n\r\nBeyond the math and reading practice, the true impact has been on the students' self-confidence. They are learning to take turns, resolve conflicts, and celebrate one another's wins. They feel like a team, and that camaraderie has significantly boosted the morale of our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1762266350336,"projectUrl":"project/game-on-building-teamwork-focus-and-f/9809239/","projectTitle":"Game On! Every day, students ask for breakfast bars—especially those who arrive late during first or even third period. Giving them a quick breakfast option ensures they have the fuel their brain needs to focus, participate, and feel ready for the day.\r\n\r\nThis project has been a tremendous blessing to our classroom. Students were genuinely excited and grateful, and several families were so moved that they donated additional breakfast bars to help keep our supply going. The snacks created a warm, supportive classroom environment where students felt cared for and able to learn without hunger being a barrier.\r\n\r\nBecause the students enjoyed the snacks and we went through them quickly, I plan to create a new project to restock breakfast bars and add additional snacks for students who get hungry throughout the day. These hygiene kits have already made a tremendous difference in our classroom.\r\n\r\nOne of our first activities was allowing students to decorate and personalize their hygiene bags with their names and artwork. This simple step helped them take ownership of their hygiene routines and feel proud of their kits. Students chose which items to include, creating bags that reflected their individual needs and comfort.\r\n\r\nThe items in the kits have been essential for our Personal Maintenance and Health lessons. The deodorant wipes, body wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss supported a full dental hygiene lesson where students practiced brushing their teeth and learned why caring for their mouth is important. These resources made the lesson hands-on and engaging, allowing students to connect the skills directly to real-life routines.\r\n\r\nStudents were especially excited when they first saw the materials. Many smiled, asked questions, and eagerly assembled their kits—showing how meaningful it was for them to have something of their own. For students who experience hygiene challenges or sensory needs, these bags created dignity, privacy, and comfort in the classroom.\r\n\r\nWe also included underwear and socks from previous DonorsChoose projects, so students have clean replacements in case of spills, menstrual accidents, or unexpected needs. Lip balm was another popular addition—helping all students feel comfortable and confident in their appearance.\r\n\r\nThe biggest ongoing impact is that these kits help students advocate for themselves daily. They now have a safe, discreet way to take care of personal needs without embarrassment, which increases their readiness to learn and participate in class.\r\n\r\nOur next steps include continued lessons on self-care, independence, and self-esteem.
