At least half of the papers I gave out during my first year of teaching went straight into the trash. It wasn't really my students' fault - I probably would have done the same with the folded, wrinkled, even dirty papers I often saw my 9th graders pulling out of their handbags or pant pockets. "Where are their notebooks? And backpacks?" I wondered naively. The answer has become abundantly clear over the last two years of teaching in an under-served community. Notebooks, binders, and backpacks are simply not part of the daily arsenal my students bring to school. My principal, being practical and sensitive to the needs of her students, has made the choice to supply students with spiral notebooks for each subject. But what to do in my rigorous 9th grade history class, where supplemental handouts and homework packets are passed out on a daily basis?
