What was truly inspiring, though, was watching the older students step up as leaders in a campaign for safety and awareness. They didn't just learn for themselves—they read books on the topic and shared them with younger classmates, sparking important conversations. The students also signed safety pledges, promising to follow the rules of the road. Many were surprised to discover laws they hadn't even known about before! Your donations provided us with supplies that are essential to the elementary art room. These materials (a new class set of scissors, a class pack of watercolor paint, a class pack of markers and washable school glue) provide so many opportunities for learning and creative expression.\r\n\r\nIn the brief amount of time since we have received these materials, the kids have already created a ton of amazing art. The materials arrived right at the start of our Black History Month unit and we put them to great use. For example, we studied the work of artist Alma Thomas and used the watercolor paint to create paintings inspired by her unique style. Another example of how we have used the supplies you all so generously donated to our art program is by studying the quilting community of Gee's Bend, Alabama. After learning about the abstract geometric designs present in these artworks, the kids created their own collaged paper quilt squares (the glue and scissors made this possible and we are so thankful). We later assembled them together into community classroom quilts - it was a great hit!
