My students enthusiastically volunteer to demonstrate the process of regrouping to their peers and they have made excellent progress towards mastering the concept. They love working together and independently with the manipulatives so much that they are working through the steps of regrouping with automaticity and without calculators that they previously relied on. It's so encouraging to find ways to present new concepts to students in an effective way that they will enjoy and continue to the point of mastery. Using manipulatives has made the difference by providing the students with concrete models that have been able to effectively utilize to visualize and solve fractions. The manipulatives that were so generously gifted to us have also helped some of the students grasp the process of converting fractions to decimals. One of my favorite things to see is a student start a puzzle thinking it looks too difficult, then continue working piece by piece until they finally finish it. That moment of pride when they place the last piece is priceless!
