Many of my students experience sensory processing challenges that can affect their ability to focus, self-regulate, and engage in learning. The sensory wall provided a structured, accessible outlet for students to safely explore tactile input, helping them calm their bodies and minds throughout the school day.\r\n\r\nSince implementing the sensory wall, I observed noticeable improvements in students' emotional regulation and classroom behavior. Students were better able to transition between activities, recover from moments of frustration, and remain engaged during instructional time. Instead of escalating behaviors, many students independently used the sensory wall as a coping strategy, which reduced disruptions and increased their confidence in managing their own needs.\r\n\r\nOverall, the sensory wall supported not only academic growth but also social-emotional development. It created a more inclusive, supportive learning environment where students felt understood and empowered. This project directly enhanced students' ability to participate in learning, build independence, and experience success in the classroom, making a lasting difference in their daily school experience.","fullyFundedDate":1693935510475,"projectUrl":"project/the-sensory-wall/7737171/","projectTitle":"The Sensory Wall","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Allen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8629564_orig.jpg?crop=1065,1065,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1693030868731","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8629564"},{"teacherId":4158153,"projectId":9530062,"letterContent":"I am so grateful for your support of our project, \"Social Emotional Learning Through STEM.\" Since the arrival of our new materials, the transformation in my classroom has been incredible. Seeing their faces light up with questions and wonder has been the highlight of our semester.\r\n\r\nThese tools are doing more than just teaching technical skills; they are fostering critical social-emotional growth. As students work together on STEM challenges, they are learning how to communicate effectively, share responsibilities, and navigate the frustrations that naturally come with problem-solving. It's inspiring to see them encourage one another when a design doesn't work the first time, building the resilience they need both in and out of the classroom.\r\n\r\nOne of my students, who typically stays quiet during traditional lessons, has completely come out of their shell while using these new tools. One of our favorite projects so far has been our \"Mindful Mornings\" routine. Each day begins with yoga stretches and belly breathing, giving students the chance to reset and focus before starting academic work. We've also started a \"Plant and Reflect\" project, where each student is growing their own plant and journaling about their growth journey—both the plant's and their own.\r\n\r\nDuring a recent session, one student shared, \"Watching my plant grow reminds me that I'm growing too—even if it's slow.\" Moments like that show just how powerful these resources have become.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the room was filled with excitement and curiosity. Students eagerly opened the boxes, marveling at the yoga mats, breathing balls, SEL books, and plant kits. One student asked, \"Is all this really for us?\" It was heartwarming to see their faces light up at the idea that their classroom could become a calm and cozy space made just for them.\r\n\r\nOur next step is creating a \"Mindfulness Corner\" in the classroom. Students are helping design the space, choosing calming colors, cushions, posters, and books that support emotional regulation and mental health. We'll also begin group reading circles using SEL-focused literature to help students better understand emotions, empathy, and peer relationships. The goal is to foster not just academic growth, but resilient, self-aware young people who feel safe and supported.\r\n\r\nYour donation didn't just provide tools—it helped us build a community of trust, reflection, and growth.
