Sixty five percent of the children in my school district suffer from undiagnosed mental health illness, resulting in low test scores and poor attendance. My kids operate in constant crisis and school is the only safe place for many of them. I am creating a classroom space where children can take a time out, deescalate, and process their feelings. By providing them with comfortable seating, soft sensory pleasing rugs and lighting, and other items to help facilitate the calm down process, I am hoping to decrease their suspension episodes and increase class room learning. Overall creating a more positive school climate and culture.
