With our class sets of A Little History of Philosophy, reading is an active! Students sit in small collaborative groups, dissecting concepts, marking up key quotes, and preparing for our class seminars. Instead of tiptoeing through borrowed school property, my students are actively highlighting, dog-earing pages, and filling the margins with their own thoughts.\r\n\r\nThese texts have introduced crucial college-level reading and analytical skills to my high schoolers. Through Nigel Warburton's accessible chapters, students are practicing how to pull central themes from complex ideas, interpret figurative language like Plato's Allegory of the Cave, and paraphrase 2,000-year-old logic in their own words. Rather than simply memorizing facts for a test, they are using these books to practice writing—crafting arguments that connect philosophical ideas directly to modern issues like AI ethics, wealth inequality, and social media.\r\n\r\nThe impact on individual students has been profound, especially for those who previously felt intimidated by academic texts or disconnected from traditional history classes. Having a book of their very own has completely shifted their sense of intellectual ownership. I've watched students who usually hesitate to participate gain the confidence to lead discussions. Knowing that this book goes home with them at the end of the course to form the foundation of their personal home library has made them treasure it even more. Thank you for giving my students a permanent intellectual toolkit!","fullyFundedDate":1787656480327,"projectUrl":"project/arguing-with-dead-guys-books-for-2nd-pe/10285068/","projectTitle":"Arguing with Dead Guys: Books for 2nd Period!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Farnham","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5967378_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y115&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1778591640770","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mr-farnham"},{"teacherId":6560878,"projectId":10249611,"letterContent":"Thank you for your kindness and generosity. We are using the vocabulary flashcards to build confidence with new words, especially during warm-ups and small-group activities. This has helped create a low-stress environment where students feel comfortable participating and making mistakes as they learn.\r\n\r\nStudents are preparing for short writing tasks and oral activities where they can apply what they are learning in real contexts.
