Soccer is also teaching our students valuable skills beyond the game itself, including teamwork, communication, taking turns, following rules, and learning how to handle winning and losing.\r\n\r\nWhat may seem like simple playground equipment is actually so much more. Recess is an important part of our students' day, and having opportunities to play together helps them build friendships, confidence, and social skills that carry over into the classroom. We sit together, read a Ninja book that relates to what they are experiencing, and talk about what they are feeling, why they might be feeling that way, and what they can do to work through it. These stories help students understand that all emotions are okay, but how we respond to those emotions matters. The characters make difficult conversations easier and give my students examples they can understand and relate to.\r\n\r\nWhat makes this project so special is that its impact has reached far beyond my special education classroom. These books have become valuable resources for students throughout our entire second grade! Whether a student is struggling with frustration, friendships, disappointment, or self-control, we now have stories that help us teach those important life skills.
