I have been trying in my classes to show students that games and non-screen activities are just as much fun for them. I teach in the library at my school for grades Pre-K through 4th grade. I have time after lessons and book check-out to introduce them to other activities. For 1st grade, I introduced checkers. I discovered that many students do not know how to play this game. The students were introduced to the rules, and students who knew how to play were partnered with those that did not. Many students played with each other and neither one had played before!\r\n After several classes, the students were asking to play. I also had students during inside recess request to get a checkers game from the library to play. It may be possible in the future for the library to check out games! Some other possibilities that I am considering is to introduce the now 2nd graders to the game of chess. The games that were purchased also include chess pieces. Definitely the 3rd and 4th graders will be able to play this. I am considering a chess club or chess tournament in January.\r\n I love the fact that they are interacting with each other during their down times instead of staring at a screen.
