Science fiction has shaped scientific discovery as long as the genre has existed. I, Robot is an excellent example of how science fiction has transformed into real, scientific advances.\r\n\r\nAs we were reading this text, I implemented the Socratic Seminar method. With this, students read outside of class, and then we have an in depth discussion about the text with a focus on the ethical implications of the text in class. Themes we discussed included the juxtaposition of robots vs. humans, the consequences of using technology, and also how a novel like I, Robot should shape how we approach using AI in the future. Students were challenged to think deeply about the text and make connections to our present world. We asked questions like: \"Can we be prejudiced against AI and robots?\", \"What changes in our treatment of robots if they begin to think independently?\" and \"Should robots be made to look like humans?\".\r\n\r\nIn my classroom, we did a combination of in-class silent reading, me reading aloud, and students reading independently outside of class. We interacted with the text and would use the text to help support our ethical arguments. We also used these novels to complete a comprehensive project that related to using AI for environmental issues.\r\n\r\nI am pleased that many students who were not previously science fiction fans have found a new love for the genre. All students have expressed their enjoyment of our discussions and they've appreciated how Asimov was able to foretell how robotics might look in our time. The real-world relevance of it has been particularly enjoyable for students--and for me!","fullyFundedDate":1757186927110,"projectUrl":"project/the-human-algorithm-exploring-the-ethic/9331224/","projectTitle":"The Human Algorithm: Exploring the Ethics of AI in Science","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Price","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2843153_orig.jpg?crop=1333,1333,x0,y137&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1565199861701","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2843153"},{"teacherId":2021443,"projectId":8721816,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting our cooking project!\r\n\r\nThrough your donations, we were able to prepare a variety of meals and help students learn essential kitchen skills that they can use in their everyday lives.
