The accomplishment of being accepted into 4-year university can be thrilling for any young adult. Experiencing the joy of planning and shopping for stylish dorm items - lamps, posters, throw pillows, and bedside rugs - gives a student's new living quarters their own personal touch. After all, these items will become part of their new identity for the school year ahead. Now, imagine a student attending the same university whose family simply does not have the money to purchase even the basic essentials to set up a dorm room. It's quite a different set of emotions. For these students, they are behind their peers before classes even begin. Many first-generation students have struggled throughout the college application process. They don't want to stand out from other students; they desire to be "a part of," not "apart from" their classmates. This project will provide at least some of the basic necessities for living away from home. While I know I cannot provide everything, perhaps these essentials can provide a sense of normalcy and reduce the near-constant stress of juggling responsibilities and wondering where the money will come from.
