By providing these microscopes you have given children the opportunity to explore the world in a way they have never seen nor imagined. We are very grateful and excited to get to use this equipment. All week long the buzz has been about the microscopes in the STEAM room, even my K-2 crew can't wait to use them. \r\n\r\n When the microscopes first arrived, the look on my students faces were that of shock and surprise. You could feel the excitement began to set in, for some this meant they would get to have an experience they may never have again. For others it has opened a whole new world for them filled with curiosity and wonder. Having a vast majority of low income families at our school most of our students do not really understand or know what microscopes do. What I hope this will bring to them is a drive to explore and dive into a fun way of learning our world. \r\n \r\nStudents learned the parts of a microscope and why they are important to the world today. We had 12 test slides that were all labeled different specimens which allowed students to understand all that can be explored under a microscopic lens. Among the favorites were the shrimp eggs, locust wings, butterfly wings, lily pollen and sheep's hair. Students were able to see images not visible to the naked eye. They were given an observation sheet to record which specimen they saw, the magnification used and any observations they may have noticed. It was encouraged to draw what they saw through the lens. One of my teams noticed that the lily pollen looked like letters and split water. Some students were honestly at a loss for words rather just enjoying what they were seeing and getting by to experience. We plan to go outside and forage for specimens to study while also studying hair and money. \r\n\r\nGrowing up we didn't use microscopes in elementary school. It wasn't until 8th grade that I really got my first taste in using one. It was fascinating and exciting to be able to see things on a microscopic level. By high school it was pure excitement when you saw them put out on the table. Today's children are far more advanced than I was growing up and I felt like it was important for them to have this experience and familiarize themselves with it. We have a few students who want to be biologists, engineers and some who would like to work in the medical field. This could be what drives them to continue to push through and chase those dreams. These resources have already made a significant difference in the way my students engage with science, technology, engineering, and math.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting moments was when we unboxed the materials together. The students' faces lit up with excitement as they saw the hands-on resources – everything from legos, building materials, kits to make bridges, and more! The sense of wonder and enthusiasm was palpable, and it sparked new levels of curiosity among the students.\r\n\r\nWe've already started using the kits almost every morning. For example, when students arrive at school, they find a partner and the students use the new materials to build, create, and test their models. This daily activity not only gave them the chance to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills but also fostered teamwork and collaboration. My students were able to work together to design structures and build creative mazes which gave them a real-world connection to the STEM concepts we've been studying.\r\n\r\nTheir reactions were amazing! They were engaged and motivated, eagerly diving into the projects, asking insightful questions, and taking ownership of their learning. It was clear that these new tools made a big difference in their excitement and confidence around STEM topics.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we're building on this momentum. The hands-on materials have opened up new avenues for creativity and exploration, and I can't wait to see where this journey takes us.\r\n\r\nThank you again for making all of this possible.
