We are using the games to make practicing communication skills fun and motivating, while the mirror with sounds gives students an engaging way to watch themselves as they practice speech sounds and oral-motor movements. The AAC books are also helping us introduce and reinforce the importance of AAC as a way for students to communicate their wants, needs, ideas, and feelings.\r\n\r\nMy students were excited to see the new materials and were eager to explore the games and interactive activities. Having fun, hands-on materials helps encourage students to participate, take turns, communicate, and stay engaged during therapy.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite parts has been seeing students use the materials while practicing functional communication skills. A simple game can create opportunities to request a turn, ask for a preferred item, make a choice, imitate language, or expand an utterance. These small moments can be very meaningful steps toward becoming more confident communicators.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, I will continue incorporating the new resources into individual and small-group speech therapy sessions. One concern they all agreed on was that the height of the slide could be dangerous for younger students.\r\nStudents then worked in small groups to brainstorm solutions that would make the slide safer without removing it from the playground. Their ideas were creative and thoughtful: adding tubes, placing nets underneath the slide, or simply making the slide shorter. I was so impressed by the way they identified a problem, worked together, and developed possible solutions.
