The snacks from this project were first shared during our Open House and throughout the first week of school. With approximately 115 eighth-grade Math I students, these treats helped me create a welcoming classroom environment and gave me a fun way to celebrate my students as we learned our classroom routines and began building our math community.\r\n\r\nOne of our favorite moments happened on Thursday during a team puzzle challenge. Students worked together to complete a 100-piece puzzle, practicing communication, teamwork, perseverance, and problem-solving. The winning teams were excited to receive snacks, hot chips, and candy as their prizes, while the rest of the students also received candy for participating and putting forth their best effort. Their reactions were priceless! They were smiling, celebrating with their teammates, and were genuinely excited about being recognized for their hard work.\r\n\r\nWhat made me happiest was hearing my students ask when we could do another activity like this again. This experience showed them that our math classroom can be a place where they work hard, collaborate, solve problems, and have fun at the same time. As we move into our Math I lessons, I plan to continue incorporating engaging challenges and collaborative activities that encourage students to participate, persevere, and become confident problem solvers.
