Your kindness has made a real and lasting difference for students who needed it most. I want to share a meaningful update: since this project was submitted, I transitioned to a new position at another Title I-eligible public high school. Your funding found a beautiful new purpose. I used it to create a dedicated reading area with library shelving and a curated book collection serving two groups of students with tremendous need. The first group is students in our self-contained Special Education programs — high schoolers with cognitive and learning differences who are developing their reading skills at elementary comprehension levels. The second group is our English as a Second Language (ESL) students who are new to learning English and are building both language and literacy skills simultaneously. For both groups, accessible, engaging books are not a luxury — they are essential.\r\n\r\nStudents check out books to use with classroom lessons and read for enjoyment. The bilingual Spanish-English titles have been especially valuable for our ESL learners, offering a bridge between their home language and English. Best of all, students can take books home in their tote bags and keep them over the summer — ensuring that reading doesn't stop when the school year does. You gave students who are so often overlooked a reading life they deserve. They are readers — and because of you, they have the books to prove it.","fullyFundedDate":1746718700965,"projectUrl":"project/growing-readers-together-community-lite/9268341/","projectTitle":"Growing Readers Together: Community Literacy Ambassadors","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Price","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8992159_orig.jpg?crop=322,322,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1680192579507","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8992159"},{"teacherId":10327387,"projectId":9853698,"letterContent":"Thanks to your support, One of Us Is Lying has had a powerful impact on student engagement and literacy growth in our classroom. This novel introduces students to important reading skills such as analyzing multiple points of view, tracking character development, identifying theme, making inferences, and citing textual evidence to support their thinking. Students are also exposed to higher-level vocabulary and complex sentence structures, which helps strengthen both comprehension and academic language skills.\r\nReading in our classroom is interactive and supportive. Students read sections of the novel independently and during guided read-alouds, pausing to discuss key events, character motivations, and clues that move the mystery forward. We use small-group discussions, annotation, and written responses to help students slow down and think deeply about the text. Having access to the book allows students to reread important scenes, follow along during discussions, and feel more confident participating in class.\r\nSeveral students who previously struggled to stay engaged with reading are especially enjoying this book. The suspense and mystery keep them motivated, and many students are eager to predict what will happen next or defend their opinions using evidence from the text. Students who were once reluctant readers are now actively contributing to discussions, asking thoughtful questions, and showing pride in their understanding of the story.\r\nBecause of this project, students are not only improving their reading skills—they are learning that reading can be exciting, meaningful, and something they can succeed at. Your generosity has helped create a classroom where students feel confident, curious, and invested in their learning.","fullyFundedDate":1762611098476,"projectUrl":"project/dive-into-the-one-of-us-is-lying-serie/9853698/","projectTitle":"Dive Into the “One of Us Is Lying” Series","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Simms","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10327387_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1770596419866","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10327387"},{"teacherId":10304015,"projectId":9797764,"letterContent":"We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude for your generous donation to our DonorsChoose project, \"Holiday Arts Night.\" Your support played a vital role in making this event a meaningful and memorable experience for our entire school community. Because of your kindness and belief in arts education, we were able to provide a creative, inclusive, and joyful event that reached students across multiple grade levels.\r\n\r\nHoliday Arts Night was designed to bring students together through creativity, expression, and celebration, and thanks to you, that vision became a reality. Our elementary students were filled with excitement as they explored hands-on art activities that encouraged imagination and self-expression. For many of them, this was an opportunity to engage with art materials and techniques in a new and inspiring way. Their enthusiasm and pride in their creations were evident, and it was incredibly rewarding to watch their confidence grow as they shared their work with friends and family.\r\n\r\nOur middle school students also benefited greatly from this experience. At an age where self-expression becomes increasingly important, Holiday Arts Night offered them a positive and welcoming space to explore creativity while connecting with peers. The activities encouraged collaboration, problem-solving, and artistic risk-taking, allowing students to express themselves freely while building important social and emotional skills.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting outcomes of the evening was the enthusiastic participation of our high school students. While the event was initially planned with younger students in mind, our high schoolers quickly became engaged and immersed in the activities. They embraced the opportunity to create, relax, and connect in a festive environment, reminding us that the arts have the power to inspire and unite students of all ages. Many of them even took on informal leadership roles, helping younger students and fostering a sense of mentorship and community throughout the evening.\r\n\r\nBeyond the art projects themselves, Holiday Arts Night created a space where students, families, and staff could come together to celebrate creativity and togetherness during the holiday season. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, conversation, and a shared sense of joy. These moments of connection are invaluable, especially during a busy and sometimes stressful time of year, and they contribute greatly to a positive school culture.\r\n\r\nYour generosity made it possible for us to provide quality materials, engaging activities, and a welcoming environment that ensured every student felt included and valued. More importantly, your support demonstrated to our students that there are people beyond their school who believe in them and care about their education and well-being. That message alone has a lasting impact.\r\n\r\nThank you for your generosity, your support of arts education, and your commitment to enriching the lives of students. Because of you, Holiday Arts Night was not just an event, but a meaningful experience that our students will remember for years to come. We are truly grateful for your role in making this possible.","fullyFundedDate":1761426103221,"projectUrl":"project/holiday-arts-night/9797764/","projectTitle":"Holiday Arts Night","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lynn","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10304015"},{"teacherId":2973437,"projectId":9001919,"letterContent":"My seniors enjoyed reading Frankenstein. This particular novel really helped with building a deeper understanding. We had quite a few students who hadn't read a novel in awhile, let alone a brand new book. They were excited and I was surprised how they took care of those brand new books. After reading the novel, they were eager to read another one. This novel coincided with another project that we did. The students also built robots upon finishing reading this novel. It was a big hit! They were very eager to read the next novel.","fullyFundedDate":1739210609988,"projectUrl":"project/bringing-frankenstein-to-life-through-ro/9001919/","projectTitle":"Bringing Frankenstein to Life through Robots","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Danza","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2973437_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1512491195835","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-danza"},{"teacherId":8992159,"projectId":9203619,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support our library has been transformed into the STEM hub I dreamed it could be! The Dell desktop computer and monitor you provided have created opportunities for our students that simply weren't possible with their Chromebooks alone. What excites me most is watching students discover they can run sophisticated coding programs like Python and Java development environments that require desktop processing power. The 20-inch screen has been a game-changer for students who has vision challenges. They can now clearly see the intricate details in molecular diagrams and engineering blueprints that were impossible to make out on smaller screens.\r\n\r\nThe independence this workstation has given our students is remarkable. They're no longer waiting for me to help them access our library catalog system – they confidently search for resources, print research materials, and manage their own learning. What touches my heart most is seeing first-generation college hopefuls using the computer after school to research universities and complete online applications. This is the first time they've had reliable access to a full computer with a printer, which has been essential for their college preparation.\r\n\r\nYour investment has done more than provide technology – you've given our students dignity and equal footing with their peers. When they tell me they no longer feel \"behind\" because they can now complete the same digital projects as students in well-funded districts, I know you've truly bridged the digital divide. These students are resilient and brilliant, and thanks to your belief in them, they now have the tools to show the world what they're capable of achieving.","fullyFundedDate":1746192403407,"projectUrl":"project/stem-gateway-rural-librarys-computer-w/9203619/","projectTitle":"STEM Gateway: Rural Library's Computer Workstation","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Price","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8992159_orig.jpg?crop=322,322,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1680192579507","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8992159"},{"teacherId":8992159,"projectId":9136415,"letterContent":"Thanks to your incredible support, our library has been transformed into a space where every student can find themselves reflected in literature. The diverse collection you helped us acquire has already begun making a profound impact on our students' reading lives. What you may not realize is that these books aren't just entertaining stories—they're powerful teaching tools that help students develop critical thinking skills, cultural awareness, and empathy. The Percy Jackson series, for example, introduces students to classical mythology while teaching them about heroic journeys and character development. Our graphic novels like Maus and I Am Alfonso Jones help students analyze visual storytelling techniques while grappling with important historical and social justice themes. Books like Just Mercy teach students about argumentative writing and research skills as they explore real-world issues of justice and inequality.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom now looks completely different than it did before your donations. Instead of struggling to find books that connect with their interests, students are eagerly browsing our new collection and making genuine connections with characters and stories. I've watched our English language learners gravitate toward the manga and graphic novels, using the visual elements to support their comprehension while still engaging with sophisticated narratives. Meanwhile, students who previously claimed they \"hated reading\" are now checking out multiple books at once, particularly drawn to series like Five Nights at Freddy's and Amulet. One of my most reluctant readers, a sophomore who insisted he only liked video games, discovered the Five Nights at Freddy's graphic novels and has since read the entire trilogy.\r\n\r\nPerhaps most importantly, these books have created opportunities for meaningful discussions about identity, justice, and belonging. Students are forming impromptu book clubs around titles like Lumberjanes and Nimona, discussing not just plot points but the deeper themes of friendship, acceptance, and finding your place in the world. Your generosity has given our students more than just books—you've given them mirrors to see themselves and windows to understand others, creating a library space that truly belongs to them.","fullyFundedDate":1741126765720,"projectUrl":"project/diversifying-shelves-stories-that-speak/9136415/","projectTitle":"Diversifying Shelves: Stories That Speak to All","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Price","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8992159_orig.jpg?crop=322,322,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1680192579507","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8992159"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_2665","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":798,"numTeachers":47,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":51,"percentWhite":30,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":13,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":3,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"17.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":54.3,"schoolId":2665,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Southwest Edgecombe High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Southwest Edgecombe High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/edgecombe-county-public-school-district/southwest-edgecombe-high-school/2665"}
