The resources have given them opportunities to practice important skills while actively working together, solving problems, and explaining their thinking. One of my favorite moments was watching a group of students become completely engaged in a learning game and then excitedly celebrate when they figured out a challenging problem. They were learning without even realizing how much they were practicing!\r\nMy students were immediately excited when they saw the new materials! They wanted to touch, explore, and figure out how everything worked. They were especially excited to learn that they would be able to use the materials through games and hands-on activities rather than simply completing another worksheet. Their excitement quickly turned into focused learning as they began playing, working with their classmates, and challenging themselves.\r\nOur next step is to continue using these resources to deepen the skills we are currently learning in class. Students will have opportunities to practice skills independently and with partners, explain their thinking, and apply what they have learned in new situations. I am especially excited to continue watching students who may struggle with traditional paper-and-pencil activities build confidence as they experience success through hands-on learning. Due to inventory issues, this project ended up providing movement scarves and a set of colorful rhythm sticks instead of solely drums. In many ways this was a blessing because of how versatile these resources are. Since I started at my current elementary school, we have never owned more than five hand drums for students to use. My kindergarten and first grade classes were extremely grateful to have one-for-one drums and being able to learn and play rhythms as a whole class has benefited their learning greatly! \r\nMy students also love the scarves and they have been used in a variety of lessons including high versus low, staccato versus legato, demonstrating tempo in different songs, and performing movements to accompany the children's book \"In the Tall, Tall Grass.\" I was also inspired to theme our spring concert \"Color Pop\" where the choir will be singing themed songs and will be using the scarves as props with \"True Colors\" and \"Kaleidoscope.\" We are still practicing for the show next month, but they are very excited and love the extra special touch that the scarves give. \r\nIn a time where classroom funding seems and is very unstable, I want to express how much I appreciate your contribution. Let me try to explain. \r\nOur class is made up of 11 students ranging 3 to 5 years of age. Each child has their own unique learning and communication needs. Some students have autism, others have developmental delays, and 7 of the 11 students are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Because our students begin school as young as 3, most of them come with little to no language at all. They communicate by crying, showing emotions, pulling adults to what they want, or simply not communicating much at all and inatead trying to meet their needs through various ways--some of which can be dangerous. \r\n\r\nIt is our job as teachers to come alongside students and families and try to introduce language in a way that facilitates understanding and engagement. This is where color visuals become so important.\r\nA color printer allows me to make visuals to intoduce/review vocabulary, to create communication boards, to introduce prompts, and more. It allows me to see the needs of a child, brainstorm a way to help them, and then create it--all within a short period of time. \r\nOne of the most impactful things produced has been the visuals and adaptive books made to pair with our favorite stories. One of our students loves these so much, she is now able to name each animal from Polar Bear, Polar Bear What Do You Hear. She can even recite this book from memory. \r\nI love watching my students learn and make connections!
