Before learning about the bird house, students learned all about birds needs and how they are specialized to meet their needs. As an intro into the second portion of the unit, students learn about birds who have needed human intervention to survive. They talk about Maggie (the one eyed peregrine falcon), Pale Male & Lola (the famous red tailed hawks from NYC), and Pierre (the penguin who lost his feathers) as if they are close friends. \r\n\r\nWhen they found out that they would get to be bird helpers by building bird houses for their homes in the community, the excitement was palpable. Every day was met with inquiries about the bird houses and high energy conversations about their plans for them. They have loved the opportunity to make a difference within their own neighborhoods for the animals they have come to care so much about. As teachers, watching them build, paint, and decorate was so rewarding, as we watched the perseverence, initiation, collaboration, and stewardship we taught them being used in real life. These bird houses are more than wood and paint. They are a gift of character and community engagement that will lead them into the brightest futures.","fullyFundedDate":1758221326841,"projectUrl":"project/home-tweet-home-building-nests-for-the/9590998/","projectTitle":"Home TWEET Home- Building Nests for the Birds We Study","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Collman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1922931_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1565540413095","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrscollman"},{"teacherId":9063215,"projectId":9565886,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation that made it possible to add a new rug to our classroom. The pillows have transformed our classroom library into a welcoming, comfortable space where students are excited to read and spend quiet time. Our new social-emotional learning books have become an important part of our daily routine, helping students better understand their feelings, build empathy, and navigate challenges.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the excitement was immediate and contagious. Students couldn't wait to try out the headphones, and many rushed to the library area to get comfortable with a book. There was a sense of pride and appreciation as they realized these special items were just for them.\r\n\r\nOne memorable moment was during a recent reading block when students independently chose to sit in the library with pillows, fully immersed in their books, while others used headphones to listen and follow along. The calm, focused energy in the room was incredible and showed just how impactful these resources have been.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we will continue integrating these tools into our daily instruction. Students will use the headphones for listening centers and personalized learning activities, while the library space will support both independent reading and small group discussions.
