During the past few weeks, we have been engaged in studying a new unit, \"The Life Cycle of a Plant\". This unit has provided the students with an understanding of the role plants in the environment, while making connections to the natural world around them. \r\n\r\nThe students read many nonfiction books about plants and shared the information they learned with peers. They even wrote facts in their journals. In addition, they had fun reading nonfiction stories, which had a planting theme, such as \"The Carrot Seed\", \"The Little Red Hen\", and \"The Tiny Seed\". \r\n\r\nWe have now begun a hands-on project, which entails having each student plant their own flower seeds. Each morning the students observe their planted seeds for growth. This project has allowed the students to have fun while learning to use their observation and inquiry skills. As the plants grow, I hope to hear the students using new vocabulary used, such as sprout, roots, and stems. Most importantly, I hope the students are able to create fond memories. Our goal is to bring home flowers by Mother's Day.\r\n\r\nI would like to thank everyone for helping our second grade class to engage in a memorable, hands-on learning experience. First, we read stories about snowmen, such as \"What Do Snowmen Do at Night\". Then, we worked on writing \"How to Build a Snowman\" paragraphs and we were sure to use words that showed order such as first, next, then, and finally. Our new white boards and markers really helped us to engage in this task. Who doesn't like to use a marker? Finally, came our favorite part, snowmen crafts.\r\n\r\nCreating snowmen with our new craft supplies created lots of fun for all the members of our class. Our favorite activity was creating snowmen magnets. This activity required several steps, so we were able to review the word sequence and use our connecting words (first, next, then....) with a hands-on task. We loved gluing, painting, and decorating sticks to look like a snowman's face. After placing a magnet on the back of our creation, we had a snowman magnet that could hold our classwork on the fridge, when are creations go home. We were so into snowmen, that we even created giant snowmen using markers, glue, and papers. The children were so involved in this task and loved using their imaginations to make unique hats and scarves. When we completed our snowmen crafts, we had fun imagining what our snowmen would do at night while we were sleeping. The streets of Yonkers are filled with snowmen at night. Can you believe some even sneak into School Five?
