Because of you, my classroom will become an even more vibrant, inclusive, and joyful space for my students to learn, create, and explore who they are. The multicultural puppets, crayons, markers, construction paper, and people cutouts you helped us purchase will make a profound impact on the way my kindergartners see themselves and one another.\r\nFrom the moment my students watched me unpack the new materials, there was a collective \"wow!\" across the room. They were especially excited about the multicultural crayons and markers as I added them to their desk supplies. One child eagerly held up a brown crayon and exclaimed, \"This one matches me!\" Another student began mixing colors to find the perfect shade for their skin tone, saying, \"I can make my own color!\" What could have been a simple art activity quickly became a meaningful conversation about identity and belonging. My students learned that skin color is one of many things that make us special, and that every person's shade deserves to be represented.\r\nThe multicultural puppets have become an instant favorite during our storytelling and social–emotional learning times. Each puppet represents different backgrounds and features, allowing students to create stories that reflect the diversity of our classroom and community. During one activity, we used the puppets to act out scenarios about fairness, kindness, and inclusion. The students naturally used the puppets to show empathy and problem-solving — for example, helping a \"friend puppet\" who felt left out or voting together on how to make a group decision. Through play, they were practicing the core civics concepts of equity, respect, and voice — ideas that are often hard to teach at this age but come alive through creative storytelling.\r\nThe construction paper and people cutouts will help us extend these lessons into art and writing. Each student can create a self-portrait using materials that finally allowed them to represent their true skin tone, hair texture, and facial features. I just know how incredible it will be to see how proud they are to make \"people\" that actually look like them. We will use the puppets and cutouts to create a \"Kindness Community\" wall, where students will add drawings of themselves doing something that helps our classroom — sharing supplies, including others at play, or cleaning up after centers. The sense of ownership and pride they will feel in seeing their work displayed will be powerful.\r\nThese simple but deeply meaningful materials will transform not only how we make art but also how we talk about ourselves and one another. Every day, my students are developing language to describe fairness, feelings, and respect. They are learning that every person deserves to be seen and valued — lessons that go far beyond kindergarten. \r\nAs we continue the year, our next steps include using these materials in a \"We Belong\" storytelling project, where students will create puppet shows celebrating their unique identities and family traditions. They will also collaborate on a large \"Friendship Mural\" using their people cutouts to represent how our classroom community fits together — different colors, sizes, and personalities, all connected. These activities will help reinforce the message that inclusion and representation are not just topics for discussion, but ways of being every day.\r\nYour generosity has given my students the tools to see themselves in their learning, to express pride in who they are, and to celebrate the beauty of our differences. You have helped us build a foundation for understanding justice, respect, and belonging — values that will shape these children for years to come. Thank you for investing in their confidence, creativity, and voices. Because of you, our classroom is a brighter, more equitable, and more joyful place to learn.","fullyFundedDate":1759852428153,"projectUrl":"project/racial-justice-representation-for-kind/9407546/","projectTitle":"Racial Justice & Representation for Kindergarteners 25/26","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Dana-Rumi","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9193936_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1760554979043","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9193936"},{"teacherId":9193936,"projectId":9288224,"letterContent":"I can't thank you enough for contributing to my classroom project. These texts are a wonderful addition to our library, and they provide valuable opportunities for our students to explore diverse cultures and perspectives. In our classroom, we focus on building essential literacy skills, such as comprehension, critical thinking, and making connections between texts and their own experiences. The new books are helping to foster these skills by introducing students to characters, settings, and stories that reflect a wide range of backgrounds, which in turn enhances their understanding of the world around them. We also encourage students to analyze the themes and messages within these stories, which deepens their ability to critically evaluate texts and discuss them meaningfully.\r\nReading in our classroom is an interactive and student-centered experience. We engage in group discussions, partner reading, and individual reflections, where students share their thoughts and questions about the stories. They are encouraged to think about how the characters' experiences might relate to their own lives and to ask questions that promote further understanding. Some of our students, particularly those who are from similar cultural backgrounds to those represented in the books, have really enjoyed connecting with the characters and seeing their stories reflected in the pages. Others are discovering new aspects of different cultures and traditions that they hadn't encountered before, which has sparked their curiosity and eagerness to learn more.
