It was so important that our readers had a vast collection of high-quality books to choose from, and this project went a long way in promoting student choice and voice.\r\n\r\nOverall, this initiative had a positive impact on younger and older students alike. Our older students used the books to hone their fluency skills through repeated practice readings. They gained confidence in their reading abilities and grew to see themselves as leaders within our school community. Our younger students were exposed to new stories and perspectives. They looked up to our readers and gained a new appreciation for literacy. Debbie Fong even came in early to sign each book, making this gift extra special!\r\n\r\nIn preparation for Debbie Fong's visit, we all read the book's first chapter together during library class. Using panels from the book, students were able to learn firsthand about the power of visual storytelling in graphic novels. They practiced using illustrations to make inferences about the characters and setting, and they recorded their thoughts to share with each other.\r\n\r\nDuring the visit, students read the remainder of the book along with the author. They also participated in a drawing demonstration featuring the book's main characters and had the opportunity to ask questions about the book. It was a great experience!\r\n\r\nThese copies of The Faraway Forest: Wally's Route will be treasured by students for years to come!
