This year I serve over 500 students in grades Pre-K through 5. We are a Title I school, and most of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our school opened in September 2015, and together our students, teachers, and families are working to build a welcoming and inclusive school environment. Our students and families come from many different countries and speak a wide variety of languages, and our students love learning from one another. My students' musical interests reflect the tremendous diversity of our school community. My students sing lullabies in Spanish; they show me instruments they remember from their homes in Bangladesh; they dance to American pop music, cartoon soundtracks, and children's songs from a wide variety of cultures and traditions. We are working to build a collection of classroom and concert repertoire that represents students' own musical interests and traditions.
