When the boxes arrived containing the beautiful xylophones, metallaphones, and glockenspiels, our music room at PS145M was instantly transformed into a place of wonder and excitement. As a Title I school in the Upper West Side, access to high-quality instruments like these has always been a challenge—and now, thanks to you, my students can explore music in a hands-on, joyful, and meaningful way.\r\n\r\nSecond and fifth grade students used these instruments in their Spring Concert all about Asian American Heritage, and some of the most impactful moments from that event was the second graders playing the melody \"Arirang,\" a unofficial anthem of Korea, and the fifth graders playing an entire orff-estration to a Japanese song called \"Ka e u No.\" These moments would have been impossible without your donation, and the way students felt empowered as musicians from this access to high-quality instruments made all the difference.\r\n\r\nKindergarten, First Grade, Third Grade, and Fourth Grade have been using these instruments since the Spring Concert, and have played orchestrations to folk songs like \"Bow Wow Wow,\" \"Starlight, Starbright,\" and a hip hop orchestration inspired by the book \"Nighttime Symphony.\" It is incredible how accessible these instruments have been to students of all ages, and to see how students are learning to layer simple melodies/ostinati to create beautiful textures using pentatonic scales. Students are not only demonstrating their musical understanding on these instruments, but also gaining confidence in their creative voices.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, I am already rethinking my entire curriculum for next year now that we have these incredible glockenspiels, metallaphones, and xylophones.
