As an elementary ENL teacher working with K–2 students, I focus on building foundational language and writing skills from the very beginning, and this training has really helped me strengthen how I do that.\r\n\r\nI'm using what I learned to be much more intentional and explicit in how I teach early writing skills. Instead of expecting students to \"just write,\" I now break things down into very clear, manageable steps. We practice forming simple sentences out loud before writing them, use visuals and sentence frames, and build vocabulary together as a class. For example, we might start with a shared sentence like \"I see a ___,\" and students fill in the blank using new vocabulary we've practiced. This helps them feel successful right away, even if they are just beginning to learn English.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite classroom moments so far happened during a writing activity early in the school year. A student who had just arrived and spoke very little English was able to independently complete the sentence \"I like ___\" and add a drawing to match. When I came over, they pointed to their work and read it aloud to me with a huge smile. It was a simple sentence, but it represented such a big step—they were connecting speaking, reading, and writing all at once. That moment really showed me how powerful these strategies can be for building both skills and confidence.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, I feel more equipped to meet my students where they are. I'm seeing more students willing to take risks, participate, and try writing—even at the very beginning stages.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, I'm really excited to continue growing as a teacher, especially in supporting early literacy skills like phonics and how they connect to writing. I'm also looking forward to upcoming units where students will begin labeling pictures, writing simple sentences, and eventually creating their own small books. It's amazing to think about how much growth happens from those first simple words.\r\n\r\nThank you again for making this possible. Your support is helping my students build a strong foundation in writing and believe in themselves as learners!","fullyFundedDate":1746825711313,"projectUrl":"project/science-of-writing/9114023/","projectTitle":"Science of Writing!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Tse","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3774042_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1508467683906","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-tse"},{"teacherId":2610439,"projectId":9691839,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, our classroom has become an even more positive and motivating environment where students are excited to learn and celebrate their progress. The motivation prizes have been integrated into our daily routines as part of a reward system that recognizes effort, growth, and positive behavior.\r\n\r\nWe use these resources during individual and group activities, particularly in reading and math. For example, during our independent reading program, students earn points for staying on task, completing assignments, and showing improvement. They can then exchange those points for small prizes. One memorable moment was when a student who typically struggles with focus worked diligently all week to earn a reward—his pride and excitement when choosing his prize was incredible and truly highlighted the impact of your support.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their reactions were filled with excitement and curiosity. It immediately created a sense of anticipation and motivation. Even students who are usually hesitant became more engaged, eager to participate, and determined to meet their goals.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we plan to expand this system into longer-term goal setting. Students will work toward larger rewards tied to academic milestones, such as completing a book series or mastering key math skills. This not only reinforces positive behavior but also teaches responsibility, perseverance, and goal-setting.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, our students are more motivated, confident, and invested in their learning journey. With the addition of individual headphones, students are now able to fully access and engage with the technology we use every day to support their learning.\r\n\r\nIn elementary classrooms, technology plays a critical role in helping students build foundational skills in reading, writing, and math. Many of our learning programs include audio components such as read-alouds, phonics instruction, language support, and step-by-step directions. Before having headphones, it was often difficult for students to hear clearly or stay focused when multiple devices were in use at once. Now, with their own set of headphones, students can listen closely, follow along independently, and truly absorb the material being presented.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting aspects of this new addition is the sense of independence it gives our students. They take pride in using their headphones and feel empowered to take control of their own learning. Whether they are listening to a story, practicing math skills, or working through an interactive lesson, students are more engaged and motivated. The headphones create a personal learning space for each child, helping them stay focused and reducing distractions in a busy classroom environment.\r\n\r\nThe impact has been especially meaningful for certain groups of students. Our English language learners benefit greatly from being able to hear clear pronunciation and replay instructions as needed. Students who require additional support in reading can listen to texts while following along visually, strengthening both comprehension and confidence. Additionally, students who are easily distracted are better able to concentrate when outside noise is minimized. For these learners, the headphones have made a noticeable difference in their ability to stay on task and complete their work successfully.\r\n\r\nBeyond academics, the headphones have also helped create a more inclusive and equitable classroom environment. Every student now has equal access to high-quality audio, ensuring that no one is left out or struggling to hear important instructions. This has fostered a sense of fairness and consistency that benefits the entire class.\r\n\r\nOverall, this project has enhanced both teaching and learning in our classroom. Students are more focused, more independent, and more excited about using technology as a tool for growth. Your support has made it possible for us to create a learning environment where every child can thrive.
