Over the past several weeks, my students have been learning about how body systems interact in our first unit of study, The Marathon Runner, written by New Visions for Public Schools. This unit integrates literacy, hands-on activities, and data analysis to build the skills students need to succeed on the new Regents Biology exam. Even with this strong curriculum, students often struggle to visualize key ideas—especially how processes at the cellular level influence the body at the system level. The models you helped fund have been essential in supporting their understanding and making these abstract concepts concrete.\r\n\r\nThroughout the unit, I used the models frequently to help students form clear connections to the content. For example, having a large-scale plant cell model available during our Onion Cell Osmosis lab made it much easier for students to understand how plant cells respond differently in salt water versus distilled water, and how those changes affect the cell membrane and cytoplasm. Additionally, while students were reading about osmoregulation at the system level, I used the human body model to show the location of the kidneys in relation to other systems and to illustrate how blood vessels transport blood to the kidneys for filtration.\r\n\r\nThank you again for helping my students make these important connections and for giving them a more realistic perspective on how the human body functions. Your support truly made a difference in their learning experience.","fullyFundedDate":1758376213911,"projectUrl":"project/making-science-tangible-for-all/9627470/","projectTitle":"Making Science Tangible for All!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Soler","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7077990_orig.jpg?crop=1863,1863,x184,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755651114002","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7077990"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_695","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1254,"numTeachers":112,"percentFrplEligible":91,"percentAsian":61,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":4,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":32,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"11.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":75.4,"schoolId":695,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Junior High School 220 John Pershing on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Junior High School 220 John Pershing","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/jhs-220-john-pershing/695"}
