My students are an excited group of 6th grade learners and the majority of them love to read, when it is a book they are interested in. Unfortunately the books that are provided in the upcoming unit are either outdated or non-existent. This year, I had to use a hot glue gun to glue pieces of books together and make fake covers out of card stock or index cards so that every child in the class had their own copy of the book we were reading. Last year when reading the set of trade books provided, less than 50% of my students showed even the slightest interest in the book.
In order to pique a child’s interest in reading, the book must be something that grabs their attention and arouses their interest.
It is additionally important to find books that relate to their experiences. As a teacher it is my job to ignite my student’s love of reading so that they will want to read. Not force them to read an old outdated book so they can pass the semester.
