A little deodorant, a Band-Aid, or some hand sanitizer might not seem like much, but for a student who needs one of those things and doesn't have access to it, it can mean the difference between feeling uncomfortable or embarrassed and feeling confident enough to get through the school day. Thanks to your generosity, our classroom now has these simple essentials available whenever a student needs them. No questions, no judgment, and certainly no embarrassment. After 27 years of teaching, I've learned that sometimes the smallest gestures of kindness can have the greatest impact.\r\n\r\nMy students know these supplies are there for them, and that's really the beauty of this project. A student can quietly grab a Band-Aid for a blister, freshen up after a long day, or take care of a basic need without having to make a big deal about it. These are middle school and high school students, navigating all the awkwardness, uncertainty, and challenges that come with growing up. Some of them are also carrying burdens outside of school that most of us never see. The last thing I want is for a student to spend the day worrying about something as basic as personal hygiene when they should be learning, laughing, making friends, and discovering who they are.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the school year, these supplies will remain available to every student who needs them. More importantly, I hope they help reinforce something I try to teach my students every day: that a classroom should be a community where we look after one another, where everyone belongs, and where asking for a little help is never something to be ashamed of. You didn't just donate deodorant, Band-Aids, and hand sanitizer. You helped us create a little more dignity, comfort, and kindness in the lives of young people. And believe me, those things matter. After 27 years of teaching, I still find so much joy in watching kids get excited about something as simple as a brand-new notebook. To some, it might just be paper and a spiral binding, but in our classroom, these notebooks become something much more. They are places for students to think, question, draw, reflect, make mistakes, and discover things about themselves and the world around them. And perhaps most importantly, every student has one of their own, regardless of what their family can afford.\r\n\r\nWe are putting these notebooks to work! In New Mexico History, students are exploring Indigenous cultures, drawing maps, and making connections to the rich history of the place we call home. In Psychology, students are using writing and illustrations to understand the human mind, emotions, and behavior. Throughout my classes, these notebooks are becoming personal records of learning and growth. I love watching students who might struggle to express themselves in a traditional assignment suddenly come alive when they have the freedom to draw, write, and create. Sometimes the quietest students have the most extraordinary things to say when we give them another way to say them.\r\n\r\nWhat makes your generosity so meaningful is that you've given my students more than school supplies. You've given them a space that belongs entirely to them, where their ideas matter and their voices have a place. As the school year continues, these notebooks will fill with discoveries, questions, artwork, and reflections. By the end of the year, I hope each student can flip through those pages and see just how much they've learned and grown. That's a pretty wonderful gift to give a young person.
