As teachers and students, we know how powerful it is to find a book that makes you want to keep reading—and your generosity gives our students more opportunities to experience that.\r\n\r\nIn Honors English 10, reading is much more than simply understanding what happens in a story. Our new texts give students opportunities to practice close reading, analyze characterization, symbolism, imagery, structure, point of view, and theme, and consider how authors use literary choices to communicate complex ideas. Students learn to read like writers, asking not only What does this mean? but also How did the author create this meaning, and why does it matter? These skills prepare them for the college-level reading and writing at ATC, and, most importantly, becoming thoughtful lifelong readers.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and collaborative. Students annotate passages, discuss interpretations with one another, return to the text to find evidence, write about what they notice, and sometimes discover that a classmate has seen something they completely missed. We celebrate disagreement because literature rarely has only one worthwhile interpretation.\r\n\r\nPerhaps most exciting is seeing students who don't always consider themselves \"readers\" become deeply invested in a book. Some students connect personally with characters and experiences that feel familiar, while others are drawn in by unfamiliar perspectives and worlds. Our strongest readers are challenged to move beyond summary into nuanced interpretation, while developing readers gain confidence when they discover that they, too, have something valuable to say about a text.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping us build a classroom where books are not simply assignments—they are invitations to think, question, connect, and understand ourselves and others a little better. I'm grateful for the chance to share a little more about how your support is shaping our classroom.\r\n\r\nWe are using the new resources for our culminating Core Values Mask Project, an end-of-year reflection that invites seniors to explore identity through both visual art and poetry. Students are designing and creating masks that represent the values that guide them—what they believe in, what they stand for, and who they are becoming. One especially powerful classroom moment came during our first sharing of sketches and ideas. Students explained the symbols they chose, and the room filled with thoughtful discussion, deep listening, and genuine connection as they realized how much meaning their artistic choices could hold.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their excitement was immediate and unmistakable. They gathered around the supplies, touching them, imagining possibilities, and talking eagerly about ideas they had been waiting years to express. For a group that has asked about \"the mask project\" since sophomore year, seeing the materials made the experience feel real—and reassured them that their creativity and voices matter.\r\n\r\nAs our next steps, students are refining their designs and beginning the construction of their masks while also drafting a poetic reflection that explains the symbolism behind their work. They will revise these poems through peer workshops and individual conferences before presenting their completed masks and writing to the class. As graduation approaches, this project serves not only as a final academic assessment, but also as a meaningful personal milestone—helping students articulate who they are as they prepare to step into the larger world.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving you a window into our classroom and for making this powerful learning experience possible.
