Our students have taken a research field trip to UNR and studied Aztec art styles. They have prepared the canvas background and are preparing images for the canvas transfer. They are learning painting techniques, like using sponges to make a \"wall\" texture, proportional resizing of images, and are placing their own unique flair on the images while maintaining the original style.\r\nOur goal as art club students was to get better at animation by understanding new art styles that they have never approached before. This challeneged students to leave their comfort zones, to think about a \"complete\" composition, and to discuss the meaning of symbols. For example, they discovered Xolotl, a dog in Aztec mythology that guides the dead to their final resting place. They have decided to include Xolotl in the painting beside a vase of flowers, where the name of a dearly departed student will be upon the vase. They decided the symbolism of giving our lost friend an animal to guide him was helpful to the grief our school has been experiencing since his passing. So not only are they learning the techniques of animators, but also learning about how storytelling and symbolism can help people work through their emotions.\r\nMy students are learning more than I thought they would, and they are finding ways to help other people with their work. It is very heartwarming to help them on their mission. The vast supply of resources given by your generous donations has progressed our final design towards its completion. By the end of the school year, it will be unveiled in its entirety. The paraprofessional was doing everything she could to keep the classroom running, using worksheets downloaded from the internet, or borrowed from other teachers. There was a revolving door of substitutes that came in and out and never stayed long. This created confusion for the kids and little progress. After learning that I was here to stay, the kids started opening up more. We got to see more of their personalities. All of the items on my list were requested due to the needs that were observed in the classroom. \r\n\r\nThe Big Feelings Pineapple was the biggest hit! They love the Mr. Potato Head feel to it, but also the fact that every face they make, can be replicated on the pineapple. They are overjoyed when they make a new emotion, and show me the pineapple, and make the face themselves. The conversation cubes have helped us get journal entry ideas and have started many side conversations (much to my dismay) and have helped the kids think for themselves. The fidgets helped get us through some testing, the fidget bands for the desks have helped most of the kids stay in their seats longer and ask to get up less frequently. \r\n\r\nMy favorite items are the workbooks. They have given the classroom the opportunity to pause and think about what we are feeling, and how we can adjust if needed. They also provided us with the \"in between\" work that we were missing. Keeping the kids busy and engaged is a huge part of managing their behaviors. Though these items did not give an immediate result, we have seen the improvement in each of the kids, growing a little bit each day. \r\n\r\nWe are wholeheartedly thankful for your donations and wish you the very best in your endeavors.","fullyFundedDate":1768143655300,"projectUrl":"project/calm-bodies-focused-minds-sensory-supp/9994081/","projectTitle":"Calm Bodies, Focused Minds: Sensory Support for Autism","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Amber","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10399308"},{"teacherId":8170757,"projectId":9994158,"letterContent":"The new whiteboards and markers have become a daily part of our math learning. My students use the individual whiteboards to work through problems step-by-step before committing answers to paper. This allows them to take risks, make mistakes, and try again without feeling discouraged.\r\n\r\nOne memorable moment happened during a lesson on solving equations. Students worked in small groups at the standing whiteboards to solve problems together and explain their thinking. Instead of quietly writing in notebooks, the room was full of discussion — students pointing to their work, correcting each other, and celebrating when they solved a challenging problem. It turned math into something active and collaborative, and students who normally hesitate to participate were eager to come to the board and share their thinking.\r\n\r\nHow did your students react when they first saw the materials?\r\n\r\nThe excitement was immediate. As soon as students saw the standing whiteboards and individual boards, they asked if they could start using them right away. Many of them said it made the classroom feel more like a real math lab where they could work together and move around.\r\n\r\nSeveral students commented that they liked being able to \"try it first\" on the whiteboards because it made math feel less stressful. It quickly became one of their favorite parts of class.\r\n\r\nWhat are the next steps for your students on a current classroom lesson or project?\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue using the whiteboards during collaborative problem-solving activities as we work on building algebraic thinking and understanding equivalent expressions. They will use the boards to model problems, explain their reasoning, and compare different strategies with their classmates.\r\n\r\nWe will also be using the whiteboards for quick math challenges, review games, and small-group problem solving to help build confidence and deepen understanding. These tools are helping students become more engaged, more willing to share their thinking, and more confident mathematicians.","fullyFundedDate":1768101056681,"projectUrl":"project/whiteboards-that-make-math-move/9994158/","projectTitle":"Whiteboards that Make Math Move","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Garfinkle","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8170757_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1698965741208","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8170757"},{"teacherId":2959582,"projectId":9995056,"letterContent":"This project has made a powerful difference in how my students access and engage with learning each day. The headphones allow students to focus during independent and small-group work, especially when using instructional videos, audio supports, or read-aloud features. For many students, this reduces distractions and helps them better understand content at their own pace—something that's especially important in a busy classroom environment.\r\n\r\nThe chart paper and laminated word wall materials have transformed how we interact with academic vocabulary. Instead of words being temporary or easily overlooked, our word wall is now a lasting, visible learning tool that students reference daily. Because the materials are laminated, we can reuse and update them throughout the year, allowing students to add examples, visuals, and connections as their understanding grows. This makes vocabulary learning more interactive and meaningful rather than something to memorize and forget.\r\n\r\nStudents are especially excited to see their learning displayed in the classroom. Many take pride in pointing out words they helped define or illustrate, and several students who are usually quiet feel more confident participating when they can rely on the word wall for support. English learners and students who need extra reinforcement benefit greatly from having clear, consistent visual references available at all times.\r\n\r\nOverall, these simple but essential resources have helped create a calmer, more inclusive, and more supportive learning environment. Paired with the soft glow of the outdoor string lights, the room felt warm and welcoming, which helped even our quieter students feel comfortable sharing. When they first saw the materials, especially the games, fidgets, and spinner wheels, their reactions were pure joy and curiosity. They immediately asked when we could start using everything, and many shared that the classroom felt more like a place where they could relax, be themselves, and connect with others.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, our next steps include using these tools to support ongoing social-emotional learning and collaborative projects. Students are rotating through stations that include mindfulness games, timers for goal-setting, and group activities like Telestrations and UNO to build teamwork and problem solving skills. We are also incorporating the raffle drum and prize wheel to celebrate positive behavior and academic effort.
