As we read, students are learning important skills such as identifying the main idea, making inferences, understanding characters, building vocabulary, and using evidence from the text to support their thinking. These books also give students opportunities to practice reading fluently and talking about what they have read.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is much more than simply reading words on a page. Students read independently, with partners, in small groups, and together as a class. We stop to discuss the story, make predictions, ask questions, and connect what we are reading to our own experiences and the world around us. Having engaging books available makes these experiences much more exciting for my students.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding things has been seeing students who were hesitant about reading begin to find books that interest them. There was a notable boost of engagement during our Read to Self time. Students were checking out books they didn't have access to before. In addition, my students love using the clipboards to take notes and work collaboratively when sitting on the carpet. The pocket chart and magnetic shelves allowed me to display and organize the content vocabulary words so that students can have access to them.
