A lot of what we do in 8th grade is conceptual. So putting things into perspective with the use of geometric models helps students gain context into the problems we are doing. At this level, students who have trouble computing are already at a disadvantage, so giving them help will enable them to foster their growth in mathematical understanding. My students need to feel comfortable knowing that even if they are having an off day and don't have the materials they need, that they do not have to sit out of learning for the day. They are able to get the materials that they couldn't afford or that they forgot at home.
