While most students are intrinsically motivated to come to school, some need a little bit of an outside motivator. That is the purpose of these prizes. Every day, a roster of students checked in with me. On Fridays, they earned their prize if they were present for the entire week. Then, each month, I checked their overall progress for the year. Students in the attendance group who mantained 5% absenteeism or lower earned an exciting, larger prize. Then, from March to May, our school held a school-wide attendance challenge. Students who missed 3 or fewer days during that timeframe were able to participate in an outdoor game day. Games included giant Jenga, giant Checkers, ring toss, Plinko, tic-tac-toe, 4-square, and giant Connect-4. The students earned prizes during that time, as well. It was such a fun day! \r\n\r\nWhile I am elated that our chronic absenteeism rates are dropping becasue of these programs, the biggest take away is the academic progress and social relationships that the students are building. The headphones have become a vital tool for students, allowing them to find a \"quiet zone\" and stay engaged with their work. Meanwhile, the octopus plushy and carrot have served as more than just toys; they are emotional anchors that help students self-soothe and express their feelings when words are hard to find.\r\nAdditionally, having a steady supply of snacks ensures that no student is trying to learn on an empty stomach. It is amazing how much a quick snack can turn a student's entire mood and energy level around!\r\nA Special Moment:\r\nJust this week, one of my students was having a particularly tough morning.
