My project entails me completing two components of the four total components for certification. I will do component 4, which is mainly about reaching my students' families and the community, and component 2, which is about differentiation in instruction for the individual student. The NBCT is based on five core propositions that define what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. The NBCT concentrates on teaching practice and student impact. Research shows that third grade students taught by teachers who are NBCT, are 11% more likely to do better in English language arts, on the MAPS test. Board Certification allows teachers to hone their practice, showcase their talent in the classroom and demonstrate their dedication to their students and their profession. Schools with National Board Certified Teachers are characterized by better teacher morale and retention and increased community involvement. Districts and schools that want to drive student learning recognize the power of Board certification and are taking steps to empower and raise the status of accomplished teachers.
