In a recent hands-on math lesson, my students used the magnetic number bonds on our whiteboard to break down numbers into parts and wholes. Having the physical, magnetic pieces made abstract math concepts instantly clear and engaging—they could physically move numbers around to solve problems and explain their thinking to their classmates. Meanwhile, the flexible seating allowed students to choose the learning spot where they focus best, whether that was working collaboratively on the floor or comfortably at a group table.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials arrive in our classroom, their eyes lit up with complete joy and excitement! They could hardly wait to try out the new seating options, and there was an instant buzz of energy as they explored the fresh markers, paper, and bright treasure box rewards. They truly felt celebrated and supported knowing that people outside our classroom cared enough to send them these wonderful tools.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, our next step is to integrate the fresh paper and markers into our upcoming creative writing and math storytelling projects. Students will write their own math word problems, illustrate them using our vibrant new art supplies, and then use the magnetic number bonds to demonstrate how to solve them for the rest of the class.
