As a white male teacher a female student asked me, \"why did you choose to work in a school like this when you can go to the all white schools?\" Another student answered, \"because he doesn't see color, all he wants to do is help.\" At that moment I realized the books I received from the project and the activities we completed all month was making a difference. \r\n\r\n I believe all of the students read the picture books I ordered and they all wrote a five paragraph essay on a topic related to black history month. The students enjoy being able to select a stem bin for a brain break or for a reward. They are a huge hit in the classroom. Puzzles provide a way of teaching problem solving and critical thinking that is essential for students. Challenging puzzles also help teach student to look at multiple answers to one problem. Our reading program is a scripted one and when the materials arrived the students were astounded. One student said, \"those aren't part of the reading program,\" and I told them, \"I know, we will actually read something else.\" I didn't need to motivate them as the materials motivated them instantly. \r\n\r\n Last week was Nevada Reading week and the students had a great time every day. Other students from different classes wanted to check out my new materials and I told them they had to wait. Usually reading is from the \"Into Reading, HMH script\" and this week was able to make it different. \r\n\r\n One student that hates to read kept looking at one of the books and I said, \"do you want to read it?\" He asked to take it home and I trust him enough to take care of it. This year has been fast because of donors like you that have given me materials to make the day meaningful and relevant. On the first day of school many of the students asked to use their devices in math as they were not used to using a pencil and paper. Now the students know where to find all of our supplies and the device is no longer their \"go to\" to complete work. \r\n\r\nThe students were not sure if the materials were for us as they are not used to brand new items. They were excited to see that the class will not be 100% technology and they will actually be using writing utensils to complete work. As the weather began to decrease we saw a large number of our students struggle with being properly clothed and equipped for the weather change. We saw how it effected recess times, how it limited their participation in PE and even effect their daily school attendance. \r\n\r\nBeing able to provide something as simple as a coat, hoodie or sweatpants has made it easier for them to be more comfortable at school. Resulting in more participation, better focus, and so many smiles!
