The chess club meets twice a week after school and we've been using the boards at every meeting. The wall board has been very useful to teach concepts and tactics in chess like pins and skewers and forks. The clocks really helped because we haven't had clocks available during club before. Now, the students can practice with the clocks so that they're more prepared for the tournaments. \r\n\r\nWe also used the boards during my regular Computer Science classes. We learned about artificial intelligence, especially the cases of Deep Blue and AlphaGo, and we learned to play chess and Go in order to understand why these games were difficult for humans and for computers to play well. Having the chess boards available made the whole day go smoother - instead of printing off paper boards and flimsy pieces, we were ablet o use real, tournament-quality sets instead, which dramatically boosted student engagement.\r\n\r\nThank you again for the generous donation of chess boards and clocks. The resources are helping both the Chess Club and the Computer Science classes elevate their learning.","fullyFundedDate":1769101778667,"projectUrl":"project/chess-players-just-want-to-have-fun/10037842/","projectTitle":"Chess Players Just Want to Have Fun","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Gustafson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp906566_orig.jpg?crop=640,640,x0,y81&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1634061991170","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/906566"},{"teacherId":4929134,"projectId":10032621,"letterContent":"Middle school students are increasingly drawn to manga, and these texts offer a unique entry point for building essential literacy skills. Manga combines visual storytelling with written dialogue, which helps students develop the ability to interpret meaning across multiple modes. Readers must pay attention not only to the words but also to facial expressions, panel sequencing, and visual cues, strengthening skills like inference, sequencing, and visual literacy. For many students, especially those who may feel intimidated by traditional novels, manga provides an accessible and engaging way to practice comprehension.\r\n\r\nIn addition to supporting foundational reading skills, manga introduces students to more complex narrative elements. Many series feature layered plots, character development, and themes such as friendship, perseverance, and identity. As students follow story arcs across volumes, they practice tracking character motivations, recognizing conflict and resolution, and making predictions about future events. Manga can also expose readers to different cultural perspectives, particularly Japanese customs and storytelling traditions, broadening their global awareness and encouraging curiosity about the world.\r\n\r\nPerhaps most importantly, manga helps foster a genuine love of reading during a critical developmental stage. Middle school students often enjoy the fast-paced storytelling and relatable characters, which can motivate even reluctant readers to engage consistently with texts. This increased reading volume builds fluency, vocabulary, and confidence over time. By valuing formats like manga in educational settings, educators and donors alike can support diverse reading preferences while still promoting meaningful literacy growth.","fullyFundedDate":1768706180409,"projectUrl":"project/manga-in-the-library-lets-go/10032621/","projectTitle":"Manga in the Library? It has already made such a big impact on my students. They get excited every time we use it, and it has made learning more fun and hands-on for everyone.\r\n\r\nMy students were able to create their own designs in 3D and then actually print them out. Seeing their ideas turn into something real was really exciting for them. It gave them a chance to be creative, solve problems, and feel proud of what they made. Many of them had never used a 3D printer before, so this was a brand new experience that they will remember.\r\n\r\nYour donation has given my students opportunities they would not have had otherwise. We use the dry erase boards and markers every day to solve problems, show our thinking, and participate in whole-class discussions. One powerful moment came during a recent lesson on multi-step equations—every student was able to work through the problem in real time and hold up their board with confidence. No one was left out, and every voice was visible.\r\n\r\nWhen the supplies arrived, students were genuinely excited. Many immediately noticed that we had enough markers for everyone, which meant no more waiting, sharing, or dried-out materials. The fidget prizes have also been incredibly motivating. Students are working hard to earn them, and they've helped improve focus and positive behavior during instruction.\r\n\r\nNext, we are continuing to build collaborative problem-solving skills using our Math 360 routines. Students will be working on higher-level tasks that require explaining reasoning and justifying answers, and these materials ensure every student can actively participate. Your support has created a more equitable, engaging, and confident math classroom. Students who used to sit on the edges of the room now pull their chairs into the circle. During one of our first projects, members worked together to create affirmation posters and identity collages to display during our campus kindness week. The creativity was powerful, but even more meaningful were the conversations happening naturally while they worked—students sharing stories, finding common ground, and encouraging one another.\r\n\r\nWe are using these resources every week to build connection and leadership. Craft projects have become structured opportunities for dialogue, team-building, and collaborative planning for school-wide awareness activities. Because the space feels more comfortable and intentionally designed for belonging, students are more willing to participate and take positive risks. The materials have turned our meetings into hands-on, student-driven experiences rather than just discussions.\r\n\r\nNext, our students are planning a community-building campaign that includes student-designed visuals and peer-led activities focused on kindness and inclusion. They are brainstorming ways to use their creative work to spark conversations across campus and make more students feel welcome. Thanks to your generosity, our GSA is not just a club—it is becoming a student-led movement for connection and acceptance throughout our school.","fullyFundedDate":1769188999412,"projectUrl":"project/creating-creating-inclusive-communities/10032074/","projectTitle":"Creating Creating, Inclusive Communities","teacherDisplayName":"Mx.
