Your generosity has enabled us to discover new and engaging concepts. In fact, \"Wuthering Heights\" introduced students to complex narrative structures. Students were also able to develop skills in analyzing unreliable narration, gothic themes, and the exploration of intense emotions and social class conflicts.\r\n\"The Great Gatsby\" offered lessons in symbolism, the American Dream, and the critique of 1920s society. Students learned to interpret imagery, understand historical context, and analyze character motivations and moral ambiguity.\r\n\"A Long Way Down\" introduces contemporary themes like mental health, suicide, and interpersonal relationships. The topics provide a much needed change to the traditional topics discussed in class, which encouraged empathy, critical thinking about difficult social issues, and understanding diverse perspectives through multiple first-person narratives.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is interactive and student-centered. We use a mix of whole-class discussions, small group work, and individual reflection. Students engage with the texts through close reading exercises, annotating key passages, and exploring character development and themes. We also incorporate multimedia resources and creative projects to deepen understanding. For example, students might compare the narrative styles of Wuthering Heights and A Long Way Down or create visual representations of the symbolism in The Great Gatsby.\r\n\r\nStudents who enjoy complex characters and emotional depth are often drawn to Wuthering Heights because of its intense relationships and dramatic storytelling. Those interested in history and social critique tend to engage deeply with The Great Gatsby, appreciating its portrayal of the Jazz Age and the American Dream's complexities. Meanwhile, A Long Way Down resonates strongly with students who appreciate contemporary issues and diverse voices, especially those who value candid discussions about mental health and personal struggles. These students often participate actively in discussions and relate the characters' experiences to their own lives or current events.\r\n\r\nYour kind contributions have allowed my students to find connections to stories that they can relate to, allowing them to feel seen, understood, and inspired to explore their own experiences through literature.","fullyFundedDate":1768941843255,"projectUrl":"project/turning-pages-bringing-novels-to-life-i/10029654/","projectTitle":"Turning Pages: Bringing Novels to Life in the Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Purtle","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10405677"},{"teacherId":10087561,"projectId":9519458,"letterContent":"Hi everyone,\r\n\r\nI wanted to send a quick note to say a massive thank you for your support on DonorsChoose! The new items for our mental and social health projects have arrived, and the kids are absolutely loving them. From the new sensory tools to the group activities, these resources are making a world of difference in helping my students feel more comfortable and connected during the school day.\r\n\r\nIt's been so cool to see the immediate impact. I've noticed students who used to get overwhelmed now taking a moment to reset with the new mindfulness tools, and the social games have been a hit for getting everyone talking and working together. You can really feel the vibe in the classroom shifting toward something much more positive and supportive. It's amazing how much of a difference the right environment can make for their headspace.\r\n\r\nThank you again for looking out for my students and for realizing that their well-being is just as important as their grades. My students and I are already diving into these stories, and it's been such a joy to see their excitement.\r\n\r\nThese texts introduce a wide range of skills and lessons. Poe's works help students explore mood, suspense, and figurative language, while also sharpening their analytical and critical thinking skills. Narnia, on the other hand, opens doors to imagination, character development, and discussions about courage, friendship, and morality. Both sets of books offer opportunities for rich conversation and creative writing in the classroom.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is lively and interactive. Students often read aloud, discuss plot twists, and share predictions and personal connections. We also engage in small-group discussions and writing activities that encourage deeper comprehension and reflection.\r\n\r\nSeveral students, in particular, are completely captivated. Some are discovering a love for gothic tales through Poe, delighting in the suspense and mystery, while others are completely transported to Narnia, eagerly discussing favorite characters and imagining themselves in the story. We've been using the relaxation kits during assessments, independent work time, and even short brain breaks. Students choose tools that work best for them—some quietly use stress balls or stretchy fidgets to release nervous energy, while others focus on the liquid motion timers or coloring cards to slow their breathing and refocus their thoughts. One especially meaningful moment was watching a student who typically experiences test anxiety pause, take a deep breath, and confidently say, \"I'm ready now,\" after using the affirmation cards and a fidget.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their reactions were full of excitement and curiosity. They immediately recognized that these tools were meant to support them, not distract them. Many students shared how seen and cared for they felt, and several commented that the positive messages made them feel more confident before starting their work. What stood out most was how they encouraged one another—reminding classmates to grab a stress ball or offering kind words inspired by the affirmation cards. Their empathy and teamwork truly shined.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, students will continue using these resources as part of our ongoing lessons focused on self-regulation, perseverance, and growth mindset. We are connecting these tools to discussions about managing emotions, setting goals, and building resilience—skills that extend far beyond testing. Because of you, our classroom is not just a place for learning academics, but a space where students feel safe, supported, and empowered to do their best.
