Thanks to your generosity, these new resources have completely transformed our reading units across all grade levels, giving our students rich, meaningful opportunities to build essential literacy skills and cultural empathy.\r\n\r\nWhile many know picture books as wonderful tools for storytime, we use these specific titles to teach critical reading analysis. Through these paired texts, students learn how to compare and contrast narrative fiction with informational nonfiction. They examine how a fiction author uses character perspective, sensory details, and dialogue to convey a message, while a nonfiction text uses real photographs, bold vocabulary, and diagrams to present facts. We also explore how diverse authors draw from their personal cultures and background experiences to tell authentic stories about family, community, and tradition.\r\n\r\nReading in our library is active, collaborative, and joyful! You will see students gathered together for guided read-alouds, examining text structures, and holding fiction and nonfiction books side-by-side to compare features. Our students have been thrilled to see diverse lived experiences, languages, and cultures reflected on the pages. One student who usually hesitates to pick up informational texts completely lit up during our neighborhood units, excitedly making connections between the illustrations and their own daily life. Having access to high-interest, representative books has motivated even our most reluctant readers to participate and ask thoughtful questions. Your support did not just put books on our shelves; it gave our students the tools to become enthusiastic, critical thinkers.
