Your generosity has given my students the opportunity to experience these important works of literature in a more meaningful and personal way. Having their own copies allows students to annotate, highlight, take notes, and return to important passages as they work through challenging texts. Through these books, students are developing skills in close reading, literary analysis, making inferences, examining characterization and theme, and supporting their ideas with evidence from the text.\r\nReading Beowulf and Grendel in our classroom has also created opportunities for students to have thoughtful conversations about courage, identity, good and evil, and what it means to be a hero. Some students who initially found the language and subject matter intimidating have become especially engaged as they make connections between the characters and conflicts in the texts and stories they already know. Watching students become more confident readers as they wrestle with difficult passages, discuss their interpretations, and discover ideas for themselves has been incredibly rewarding.\r\n\r\nYour donation has done more than put books on students' desks—it has given them tools to become stronger, more independent readers and has made challenging literature more accessible to them. When students first saw the props and costumes, they looked so excited. I believe that the costumes and props made them more enthusiastic to participate and do a good job. Since I did this project last year, I can make some comparisons about what a difference this donation meant. \r\n\r\n(1) Students started quicker. Sometimes it is difficult for my students to just get started on a big assignment. Many have never done a video project like this, and even more so have not made an advertisement. I noticed that my students who are incredibly shy and struggle to talk in class, wore very elaborate costumes and became amazing actors/actresses! I think the costumes and props really helped them get into character. \r\n\r\n(2) I got over 50 submissions for projects, which is a great improvement from last year! I think that the donation helped students get engaged with the project and encouraged them to get it turned in on-time. \r\n\r\n(3) The quality of the video projects were impressive. Many of my students were shocked with how many props and costumes were had. When my students saw I cared enough to ask for these supplies, and that someone nice enough like you funded it, they felt appreciated and wanted to do a good job. Most of my students received an A on this assignment, and a big part of that was because of you, dear Donor! So thank you so much.
