We use the books to build vocabulary, practice listening and comprehension, make predictions, identify characters and story events, and learn that print and pictures communicate meaning. Reading the same story in English and Spanish also helps students make connections between languages and strengthens their confidence as they participate in discussions. The books also provide opportunities to talk about families, cultures, emotions, and experiences that are meaningful to our students.\r\n\r\nReading in our Pre-K classroom is interactive and hands-on. We read together during whole-group story time, in small groups, and throughout the day when students choose books independently. I encourage students to look closely at the illustrations, make predictions, ask and answer questions, retell parts of the story, and connect the story to their own experiences. With bilingual books, students can hear and explore both English and Spanish, which makes reading more accessible and meaningful for our multilingual learners. We also use books as a starting point for songs, dramatic play, art projects, vocabulary activities, and conversations.\r\n\r\nOur multilingual learners have especially enjoyed the bilingual books because they can hear and see words in both languages. I have noticed students becoming more eager to participate during story time because they recognize familiar Spanish words and can use their knowledge to help classmates understand the story. Other students enjoy comparing the English and Spanish words and discovering new vocabulary. Some students who may be quieter during whole-group activities are also more willing to engage when they recognize familiar words, characters, or experiences from the books. My students have learned from and enjoyed exploring the vibrant colorful center activities that were created using thee Epson Eco-Tank printer, it truly brought the activities to life. The Duplo Lego sets have created many imaginative play experiences. They have also afforded my students the opportunity to creatively collaborate while creating homes, buildings and cities. \r\n\r\nI have had the opportunity to make my small group experience more hands on and enlightening with the cvc word giant activity dice. A lot of students are kinesthetic learners and these dice have truly connected the content for my students. The privacy partitions have made a way for my students to to feel comfortable and confident when taking in class assessments by allowing them their privacy. Math concepts are often times better understood when different methods and tools are incorporated. The dominoes have are another way for my kindergarteners to literally connect the the dots with addition and subtraction. Since receiving our robots, students have been excited to code and have become noticeably more adept at problem solving since they can see the result of their computer code in real life. \r\n\r\nWe started learning with the Edison robots by using its pre-programmed functions. Students learned that an engineer coded the robots to avoid obstacles and it was their job to use classroom materials to create a maze for the robot to drive through. This peaked student engagement in physical computing. Next, students practiced writing their own code for the robots. I presented them with a printed map for the robot to drive through, and students learned how to code the directions for the robot to drive and how to transfer their code onto the Edison robots. This was the first time my students saw the code that they had created on a screen come to life with a physical device. Now that it is the end of the year, we wrapped up our coding unit with a project. Students turned the Edison robot into an ice cream truck by drawing their own town map, decorating the robot with LEGO to look like an ice cream truck, measuring the lengths of the streets, and coding the Edison robot to drive through their town with precise distances to deliver ice cream. \r\n\r\nStudents have been so engaged and have thoroughly enjoyed practicing the iterative process of coding by using these physical robots. They are better able to catch their mistakes, debug, and be creative with the code they write.
