The new books have allowed us to build lessons that focus on deeper reading skills such as, identifying themes, analyzing character motivation, and making real-world connections. Students are practicing how to cite evidence from the text, discuss point of view, and compare how different authors handle similar topics. These books aren't just stories, they're tools for critical thinking, empathy, and meaningful discussion.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is active and collaborative. You'll see students curled up with books during independent reading time, meeting in small groups to discuss plots and characters, and even using sticky notes to mark important quotes. The energy around reading has grown tremendously, students are even recommending books to each other, creating mini book reviews, and celebrating finishing a novel with pride.\r\n\r\nA few students, in particular, have truly blossomed. One student who used to say she \"hated reading\" has now finished three graphic novels in a row and can't wait to start another. Another student who struggles with focus has found success through short story collections that keep him engaged and confident. Your donation didn't just fill our shelves, it's helping build lifelong readers.","fullyFundedDate":1733284060811,"projectUrl":"project/extra-extra-help-ms-garlands-class-r/8956027/","projectTitle":"Extra! Our district provides us with a classroom library of Scholastic books which are mainly novels. Although we are very thankful to have access to so many great titles, my students are mostly reluctant readers and are not interested in reading a full novel on their own without teacher direction. I had requested nonfiction books because I thought my reluctant readers would gravitate more towards true stories and nonfiction text structures. \r\nThanks to your donations, I was able to start off my school year with a book tasting where students were able to explore lots of different books. There was definitely high interest in the nonfiction book set. My classroom was surprisingly quiet as students read sections of books to see if they were interested in them, and in the end, more students checked out books from my classroom library than they had all of last year even with the concerted effort that our district had put into encouraging independent readers.\r\nOur students are our future and I am so thankful for the investment that each one of you made towards a more literate, empathetic, and brighter future. Already this year my 10th grade students read Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. They were fascinated learning about Iranian culture and also about the conflicts that this country has faced. Almost all of my students expressed that they had never learned anything about Iran before. Although the historical narrative was new for most of them, they made connections to the resiliance and independence of the protagonist. \r\n\r\nWe are currently reading Othello, and my students have been drawn into the conflict of jealousy and lies. We have been doing a lot of work around literary and rhetorical analysis with this book, and the students have been eager to trace theme development and Iago's use of manipulative language throughout the text. They have also been having fun acting out key scenes and reading the book reader's theatre style. Many students ask for key roles each day and gravitate towards the characters they personally find most intriguing. \r\n\r\nThis year my students averaged 2 years of academic growth as measured by our district reading assessments. I believe this was due in large part to having access to rigorous yet interesting texts that they were excited to read. We have done a lot of reading this year and some of that would not have been possible without your generosity. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of these future leaders.","fullyFundedDate":1739734881668,"projectUrl":"project/working-towards-a-love-of-reading/8991401/","projectTitle":"Working Towards a Love of Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Brown","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9864974_orig.jpg?crop=1931,1931,x326,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1733412896083","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9864974"},{"teacherId":8624199,"projectId":9028881,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, I've been able to create a more supportive, organized, and dignified classroom environment that truly meets the needs of my high school students. The rolling cart now serves as a well-stocked student care station filled with body wipes, deodorant, toothbrushes, feminine hygiene products, and bandages. It's discreet, clearly labeled, and accessible, making it easy for students to grab what they need without having to ask. The label maker helped organize it all, and the power strip and cable holders have made our tech corner neater and safer.\r\n\r\nOne specific moment that stood out was when a student quietly grabbed a toothbrush and whispered, \"Thank you for having this.\" That moment reminded me that these small supplies are more than just items—they're lifelines for kids navigating tough situations.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the stocked care cart, their reaction was a mix of curiosity and quiet relief. Several commented on how \"cool\" it was that we had all these items and how much it felt like someone truly thought about their needs beyond academics.\r\n\r\nRight now, my students are working on self-reflection projects in both sociology and AP Psychology, exploring how environment and basic needs affect mental health and performance. Having access to clean spaces and personal care supplies ties directly into these lessons. It also empowers students to take ownership of their well-being, which has helped improve confidence and participation.\r\n\r\nThe next steps include continuing to build out our classroom routines around cleanliness and self-care using the new broom, dustpan, cloths, and lightbulbs to maintain a safe and clean learning space. Its smooth surface allows for vibrant markers that enhance visibility, making lessons more dynamic and interactive. Students find it easier to follow along, and teachers have noticed an increase in participation and enthusiasm during class activities.\r\n\r\nThe students were genuinely excited to receive this thoughtful gift. Their faces lit up with curiosity and anticipation, eager to explore the possibilities that the whiteboard brings to their educational environment. It has not only modernized their classroom but also sparked a renewed interest in collaborative learning.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, the whiteboard will play a central role in the Garden Club meetings held every Wednesday. It will serve as a vital tool for organizing to-do lists, mapping out garden layouts, and brainstorming ideas. This addition is expected to enhance the club's productivity and foster a more structured approach to their gardening projects, further enriching the students' hands-on learning experiences.","fullyFundedDate":1713622245514,"projectUrl":"project/blackboard-replacment/8236944/","projectTitle":"Blackboard Replacment","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Morin","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8335912"},{"teacherId":8624199,"projectId":8355277,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, my classroom has truly been transformed into a space where students feel cared for and comfortable the moment they walk in. The floor lamps cast a warm glow that softens the atmosphere, and the mirror and coat rack have given students a way to settle in and feel at home. The tissue and pencil dispensers are used daily—simple things that quietly show students their needs matter. The essential oil diffuser and lotion have become part of our classroom routine during independent work time, creating a calm environment that helps students focus and feel grounded.\r\n\r\nOne of the most special moments happened the day after everything was set up. A student walked in, looked around, and said, \"It finally feels like someone thought about us when they made this room.\" That moment will stay with me.\r\n\r\nWe're currently working on personal narrative writing in sociology and reflections in AP Psychology, and these calm classroom touches have helped students take more risks in sharing and writing. It's easier to open up when the space itself feels emotionally safe.\r\n\r\nNext, we're building a new flexible seating corner where students can choose where and how they work best. The resources you helped fund laid the groundwork for this, and your support continues to impact their daily experience in ways that are both meaningful and lasting.\r\n\r\nThank you again for being part of our classroom story.","fullyFundedDate":1715393602720,"projectUrl":"project/the-compassionate-classroom/8355277/","projectTitle":"The Compassionate Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Larson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8624199_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1660595102324","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8624199"},{"teacherId":3332359,"projectId":8874843,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of my DonorsChoose project! The two new bookshelves you helped provide have transformed my classroom library and, in turn, my students' reading experiences.\r\n\r\nWhen the bookshelves arrived, my students were thrilled to see them assembled and ready to fill. They eagerly helped organize our classroom library, sorting books by genre and alphabetizing them. Now, the shelves are filled with diverse stories that reflect a wide range of cultures and experiences, making it easier for every student to find a book that speaks to them.\r\n\r\nOne moment that truly warmed my heart was watching a group of students explore the reorganized library for the first time. They excitedly pointed out books they hadn't noticed before and shared recommendations with each other. The shelves have created a more welcoming and user-friendly space, encouraging even the most hesitant readers to dive into independent reading.\r\n\r\nWith the library now beautifully arranged, my students have been better able to select books that align with their interests and lived experiences. This newfound accessibility has inspired many of them to read more often and with greater enthusiasm. Our next steps involve hosting book talks and creating personalized \"favorite picks\" displays so students can share their love of reading with their peers.\r\n\r\nYour support has made all of this possible.
