My students come from many different countries, ethnicities, and socio-economic levels. They are bright, inquisitive, and often challenging. I don't have many students who have had things handed to them. In fact, many of them face adult responsibilities each day. That is why it is so surprising to me how many of them act as though everything should be handed to them and have a serious reluctance to think. I know full well that things are not just given to them, yet that is often what they seem to expect in the classroom. Are you thinking that I don't like my students? Far from it. I have a hard time not falling in love with each and every one of them. And it is all too tempting sometimes to help them too much. I blame technology in part. I've even had students ask why they must learn anything when everything is available to them online and they can just look it up. My answer is that each thing we learn becomes a part of us, and that to continue to be, we need to continue to learn.
