These toys and games may look simple, but for many of my students, they open the door to communication. I work with young children who have autism and other significant speech and language needs, and many of them learn best through play. We are using these materials to practice requesting, taking turns, answering questions, following directions, learning new words, and interacting with others. One of the most rewarding moments has been seeing a child become so excited about a game that communication begins to happen naturally - asking for another turn, making a choice, laughing with a peer, or using words or a communication device to be understood.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new materials, their excitement was immediate. There were smiles, pointing, happy sounds, and lots of eager little hands ready to explore. For some of my students, independently asking for a favorite toy or sharing a moment of play with another child is a very big accomplishment. Those are the moments that may seem small from the outside but mean so much in our speech room.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to help students use these communication skills more independently and carry them into other parts of their school day. We will keep using the materials to build confidence, encourage peer interaction, and give students meaningful reasons to communicate. Thank you for giving my students tools that make them want to participate, connect, and find their voices. Your generosity has brought so much joy into our speech room, and I truly appreciate the difference you have made for my students.","fullyFundedDate":1778256219607,"projectUrl":"project/lifting-our-voices-with-toys/10031144/","projectTitle":"Lifting Our Voices With Toys!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Fitzgerald","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10407773_orig.jpg?crop=320,320,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1768451373162","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10407773"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_76719","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":352,"numTeachers":29,"percentFrplEligible":71,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":23,"percentWhite":46,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":12,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":11,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"12.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":68.5,"schoolId":76719,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Chouteau Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Chouteau Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/missouri/north-kansas-city-schools-74/chouteau-elementary-school/76719"}
